Steve Rogers manages to get on board the Valkyrie, a HYDRA plane containing the Tesseract and a large amount of HYDRA WMDs, pilotted by Red Skull.
During the battle, Schmidt touched the Tesseract, which opened a wormhole, sucking him through it to Vormir.
