Roger Edarft
Roger Edarft was a regionally notable entrepreneur, colonizer, and con artist during the early 2100s. His largest scandal came from his scheme to prey on colonists during the 'goldrush' on Alcippe during the 2100s-2110s. He commissioned 4 Ship Class: Pioneer 2107 Colonist Ship vessels under different names and offered "full claims" for colonists willing to pay to join his colonies. As opposed to most colonists at that time, while most colony ships charged "fees" for travel, it was common for these fees to all be combined into the common cost of buying the collective ship for the new colony. This often wasn't enough, so commonly the 'frontman' of the colony would cover the remainder of the cost under the benefit of guaranteed collective service and a position of power in the new colony to recoup his costs. All travelers would then be required to hand over a part of their earnings to the colony and while the majority would be used for the colony's survival, the 'frontman' would take a portion of the collective gains until his costs were recouped. In a new colony dependant on collective resources, this often ensured actual power for the 'frontman'.
Edarft's plan was to offer "full claim", so for a slightly increased cost of travel, colonies would owe Edarft nothing from their gains. This was incredibly appealing when presented with a planet rumored to be rich in natural resources. It was rumored far later that he was working deals along the side with shipyards to test new technology and plotted to ensure that the ships he was not on never arrived to leave him with his financial windfall and the resources of the colony. This was never proven.
