The Afterlife
Many myths and legends surround what happens after one's death...
The Afterlife is a dimensional plane that is distinct from the divine planes. It is believed that arrival in this plane almost always places one on the Everway, a never-ending road that connects all circles of the Heavens and Hells. This path is akin to a purgatory and every soul destined for a particular circle of the Afterlife must first embark on a long journey to reach their final destination. A soul that refuses to progress on this pilgrimage may be "encouraged" to continue by a passing Angel or Devil. This road is a treacherous one, plagued with other mortal pilgrims, Demons and much, much worse.
Souls that remain on the Everway for too long - either unwanting or unable to find their destination - begin to lose themselves. A Wandering Soul may eventually forget the entirety of their mortal life, becoming a husk of their previous self and simply walking for an eternity.
Aside from declaring when an individual enters the Afterlife and their intended fate upon arrival, The Gods are said to have no direct control over this realm (although some, such as Pain and Moratorum, have chosen to abandon their place in the divine planes, calling the Afterlife their home). The rule of the Afterlife is divided equally between Angels and Devils, although none strictly control the Everway. This leadership is threatened by The Everwar, a vicious conflict between the Angels of the Heavens (reporting to The Archangel), the Devils of the Hells (reporting to The Archdevil) and Demons who seek to rule over the Afterlife.
