Spoken Magic

Background

Spoken Magic is one of the four forms that magic, as it is understood by Nomads, can take. The Townsfolks, on the other hand, believe that magic outside of their religion, Religion of The Towns, is the work of The Forces and is fundamentally evil.

Using Spoken Magic

Spoken Magic is the most common form of magic and is perhaps the easiest of the four forms to master. This is simply because speaking the words provides the heks with a focus for the spell they are casting.

As a Focus

To begin with, some may use the words to help form the spell and repeat them to give both themselves and the spell the clarity they need.   e.g. "I want to heal this wound. I want to heal this wound. I want to heal this wound."

As a Vessel

It is possible to use Spoken Magic as a vessel for the spell, particularly when you are trying to enforce a direction or command onto someone else. It adds more force to the spell and creates a belief in the person the spell is being cast on.   e.g. "You will leave now."

As an Enhancement

Some use Spoken Magic to finish casting a spell or to add an additional enhancement to it. If a person is creating a rune, they may whisper words into it at the end as an additional blessing of sorts.   e.g. "May this lead you where you need to go."
It is worth noting that spells don't have specific words which are required to cast them. These words are decided upon by the heks either in the moment or ahead of time, and while they have meaning and shape the spell the same words spoken by someone else may not have the same effect. The intonation, emphasis, and pacing all matter, as they are what gives the words their meaning.
