Dark magic marks, more commonly shortened to dark marks, are permanent marks caused by extended misuse of
magic and dark magic
They appear as dark cloudy swirling markings that grow and spread across the skin as the person uses more and more dark magic slowly consuming them. The markings first form on the chest, over the
core, and spread from there traveling across the body and down the limbs.
If the magic user continues to misuse magic, the marks will eventually grow to cover nearly their entire body, reaching the face, a sign that the dark magic taking them over is imminent. Once the dark magic takes over the person is no longer a person but a dark creature who will kill anyone in its path
These dark creatures are called the Befallen and are quite dangerous and are hunted down and killed when they get too close to cities and towns.
Views on Dark Marks
Dark Marks are seen in kingdoms as a sign of bad and evil morals, and those that have them as being evil malicious people. People with dark marks, even if they have stopped using dark magic or didn’t even want to use dark magic in the first way, are often shunned by society and forced to live in exile like Hermits.
In some Kingdoms the use of dark magic is illegal, and the presence of a dark mark can be used as evidence to get the person imprisoned, exiled, or even executed. This is not the case in
Autara, but the presence of a dark mark is still looked down upon, and harming other people through dark magic is illegal.
The Befallen
Befallen, are created when a person is completely taken over by dark magic and dark marks. They are violent unpredictable creatures, which are very violent towards animals and people.
The Befallen live in shadows and darkness and are hurt by light, as such they tend to only come out at night. They are extremely hard to kill, requiring a blow to the heart or core, and will not die from natural causes like age or illness. Most of the Befallen live in the dark forest.
