The Leonin live, hunt, and guard the lands of the Endless Golden Sea, or the Oresko as they call it; a golden plain of grass which extends for hundreds of miles across south and central Esseas south of the
Kingdom of Tiriande. Believed to be cousins, or even a sub-species of Tabaxi; Leonin cut a much more terrifying visage than their slender, lithe kin. Prides of these nomadic, lion-like humanoids rarely interact with other peoples, having all they need in their homeland and knowing the treachery of strangers. Still, some Leonin wonder what lies beyond Oreskos’s borders and seek to test themselves in a wider world. Outside of the great plains, Leonin remain a rare sight.
The few that do leave the Golden Sea, can be found in
Morencia, Tiriande, the southern
Ondari Dominion, the
Meridian Concord, and large ports stretching the length of the world. Being adjusted to warm areas, they tend to avoid the northern realms of
Kargenras and
Danothmire. They seek adventure and experiences with which to test their prowess, so sign up with
Adventuring parties, mercenaries or ships crews to experience the world. Some have even set up shops to share the culture and goods of their people
Noble and Fierce
Leonin tend to be tall compared to humans and move with a boldness that suggests their physical might. Tawny fur covers leonin bodies, and some grow thick manes ranging in shades from gold to black. While their hands prove as nimble as those of other humanoids, leonin have retractable feline claws, which they can extend instantly. This, along with their ability to produce bone-shaking roars, gives most leonin an air that readily shifts between regal and fearsome. Leonin often act with confidence, which can come off as imperiousness. While this can reassure their allies, it can also suggest defiance in the face of what they perceive as imposed authority or unworthy experts. They range in height from 6-7 feet, weight between 175-250 pounds, and live lifespans comparable to humans.
Pride and Self-Reliance
Few Leonin devote themselves to the service of the gods. Centuries ago, the Leonin worshiped many of the same Gods that humans and Elves do, but after many of their prides suffered depravities at the hands of the
Human tyrants, most leonin rejected the gods. It’s not that they deny the existence of deities; they merely see the gods as mercurial and ultimately unworthy of adoration. Leonin instead rely on themselves and their prides. A pride is bound together by the experience of a shared challenge and, in particular, the sacred act of the hunt.
A Complex tribal society
The Leonin Prides are each themselves part of several much wider tribes which patrol and hunt the vast plains and savannahs. These prides are most often led by a matriarch. As a nomadic people, they have very few fixed locations. There are exceptions though; several locations are used as year round trading neutral ground for negotiations. Several permanent trading and outposts have been built near the northern edge of the plains to deal with other travellers who want to trade with the leonin. They do find themselves in continual conflict with human invaders who seek to expand their lands and centaur tribes who also roam the fields.
Zvaastra's Post - For most Leonin, and those they interact with; Zvaastra's Post, at the northern end of the Golden Sea is the both the gateway and interface between their worlds. The outpost is one of the largest permanent settlements for not only Leonin, but the other species of the Plains like Minotaur, Centaurs, and
Halfling. The city is also as much a watch post against outside invasion, as it is a trading post to exchange goods with the outside world.
