Assyria

Lords of Mesopotamia

The Assyrians rule over the lands of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, a dry shrubland, made rich and fertile by these two rivers. Their capital is the ancient city of Nineveh, in the heart of their ancestral homeland of northern Mesopotamia. Their entire country has only ever been ruled by a single monarch, who styles himself not only as King of Assyria but also as King of the Universe, a title that originated from the Babylonian kings, whom he conquered before taking their titles for himself.

Government

The King holds full power in every region and land he has under his control, ruling his native northern Assyria directly, and the rest with the aid of appointed bureaucrats, who just so happened to all be related to him somehow. He especially likes putting his cousins in places of government. He no longer has any brothers to grant power to, because he had them all executed after each of them individually tried to overthrow him in his early years on the throne, and his sons are all serving in his army, as it is his opinion that any good king needs to be a good soldier first.   There are five of these major governmental bodies, two of which in the former Babylonian lands, that of Babylonia, in where the city of Babylon lies, in the south of Mesopotamia, and Akkad, the area around the city of the same name, the area in between the regions of  Assur and Babylon.   In the more recently conquered lands there are Mittani in the northern mountains, Ugarit, in the north of the Levant, recently conquered from the Hittites, and Judea, in the south of the Levant, recently conquered from Kemet

Territory

Their current borders in the east border the great Zagros mountains, and in the west, extend all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. In the north, they share a mountainous border with the recently independent nation of Armenia, and a thus far disputed border with the Hittite kingdom. In the south, most of their border is desert, with the exception of where the great rivers enter the sea.

Religion

Most of the peasants of Assyria, especially in the southern regions, follow Gaia, the one who makes crops grow tall, and arid desertlands grow fertile, but this is not the Velen of the state, as the Assyrians, through their great war efforts have grown far more in favor of Karoush. Another popular is Deiwos, which is followed by a majority of people in the Levantine provinces.  Despite everyone following one Velen or another, the crown seems to be too preoccupied with other things, such as collecting taxes, to be bothered by their people's choice of Velen, and they have not made a real effort to convince people of the superiority of Karoush.

Magic

All those who are capable of doing magic are scouted and paid great sums of money to serve the Assyrian military.
Any who refuses this offer are often never seen or heard from again. It is unknown what happens to them exactly, the the mystique around this has discouraged most from attempting to avoid this conscription.

Recent History

they have conquered these from their former overlord, the Babylonians, who crumbled to internal strife just three decades ago.
Having consolidated their homeland, the Assyrians started looking outward, and in recent years, they have invaded most of the Levantine lands that previously belonged to the Hittite and Kemet kingdoms.
This has led the Hittite king to seek an alliance with Kemet against them.
However, This is the least of their problems, as in the east, across the Zagros mountains, word of a new conqueror, a rebel of the great nation of Medes, has risen, and already conquered all Medean lands east of the Zagros, leaving the rest to fall to the Armenian rebels.
