The Hyalus Wastes

The Trinitite Sea

The Hyalus Wastes, also known as the Trinitite Sea by some academics, is one of the most barren areas throughout all of the Feywild. During the day, the wastes appear to be a massive expanse of sand and stone as far as the eye can see. By night and under the right conditions, however, the Hylaus Wastes reveal a very different nature. When the sand of the Hylaus Wastes is away from the heat of the sun or put under even the smallest amount of pressure, the sand bursts forth into a sharp fractal of superheated glass. This causes dusk to be one of the most dangerous times of day in this barren wasteland; as the darkness of night sweeps over the landscape, massive spikes of glass erupt all over the landscape, replacing the once desolate and level expanse of sand.

Geography

The only discernable features within the sprawling Trinitite Sea are the occasional sandstone cleft. It is also rumored that one or two oases maybe positioned so that they survive in this harsh geography, but accounts of such places are spotty at best.

Ecosystem Cycles

Every day, the landscape of the Hyalus waste goes through a drastic transformation from a sharp sea of glass stalagmites to a burning desert of endless sand. The only factor that differentiates these two states naturally is the presence of the sun; as the sun dips below the horizon, the sweeping shadow that encompasses the land at night causes the land to become a maze of glass, and the opposite is true with each sunrise. The second cause of this cycle is the introduction of pressure onto the sand. Strong winds blowing against the sands of the Hyalus wastes can sometimes cause enough pressure to morph the landscape between glass and sand into a mesmerizing wave-like pattern, but even the pressure of footsteps on the sand cause it to become sharp protrusions of glass, spelling peril for any travelers brave enough to adventure through this area. To combat this danger, locals have created specially designed footwear referred to as Glass-Forager Boots, that have padding and armor on the soles to protect the wearer's feet from sharp glass.

Localized Phenomena

The sand of Hylaus Wastes and its unique properties are completely unique to this area. Not only does the sand in this area lose those properties if it is taken out of the vicinity of this desert, but all glass that is taken out of the wastes also reverts back to sand outside of the wastes. However, this loss of property can be overridden by various forms of preservation magic.

Natural Resources

The sand of the Hyalus Wastes is a surprisingly useful resource. Using conditional preservation magic, weapons and traps can be made out of the material, turning a few harmless grains of sand into a multidirectional glass skewer that can pierce many lighter armors.
The Feywild
The Feywild, the second of the four echo planes of the Wraith Globe, is a land of the faerie and the strange. Many fantastical creatures and landmarks reside here, but memories of this breathtaking world can become hazy for travelers...
