Personal history

Bethany Hawke was born in 9:11 Dragon, and is the younger sister of Garrett and Marian Hawke, and the fraternal twin of Carver Hawke. She received her magical training from her father, who was also an apostate.
Before the Fifth Blight, Bethany lived with her family in the outskirts of Lothering. Despite standing out in her curiosity about religious stories, she was known to mostly stay hidden away at home. This was, of course, because of her arcane talents. Once, she and a friend were being chased by a wild dog, and Bethany accidentally made it go to sleep. After this incident, Bethany kept herself even more in secrecy. The friend did not betray her to the templars because she was 'too nice to be magic.'
When Lothering was overrun by darkspawn, Bethany and her family fled to Kirkwall. Upon arrival, she spent a year working with her siblings to repay their passage into Kirkwall. Afterwards, Bethany and her older siblings heard about the Deep Roads Expedition and agreed to join as a last resort to acquire enough wealth and influence to get the Templars off their backs.
During the Deep Roads Expedition, Bethany contracted the darkspawn taint during a fight, and Anders brought her to the Grey Wardens he knew were camped out in the Deep Roads. Bethany harbored resentment toward her siblings for coming out of the Deep Roads unscathed, while she almost died and was permanently changed.
During the First Battle of Kirkwall, Bethany appeared with the Grey Wardens, and fought alongside her siblings once again.
In 9:36 Dragon, Bethany was abducted by Ser Thrask and used as a hostage to attempt to bargain with Garrett and Marian. However, the plan failed, and Garrett killed Ser Thrask. Bethany was thankful to her siblings for saving her life, but she still held them at arms' length - she explained that she tried to freeze herself emotionally to cope with her inability to help her family, but that only caused her more harm. She realized logically that joining the Wardens was her only hope for survival, but she was still sad and hurt.
Bethany and the Grey Wardens arrived in Kirkwall in 9:37 Dragon, just before the Destruction of the Kirkwall Chantry. She found her older siblings and apologized for her earlier attitude, thanking her siblings for saving her life. She fought alongside them, with the Wardens, in defense of the mages of the Kirkwall Gallows. Afterwards, she left with the Wardens once again.
During the War Against The Elder One, Bethany began experiencing the Calling along with the rest of her fellow Wardens. She joined them at Adamant Fortress, but strongly rejected the plan of Magister Livius Erimond. She was spared the magister's wrath by the arrival of the Inquisition, partnering with her brother, Garrett, whom she had not seen in years. Following the return of the Inquisitor from the Fade, with Jean-Marc Stroud and without Garrett, Stroud granted Bethany leave to mourn the loss of her brother.
With Carver having gone silent since the Templars split from the Chantry, Garrett lost in the Fade, and Marian missing since the fall of Kirkwall, Bethany was truly alone. She made her way to the Free Marches, to one of the only true friends she had left, Prince Sebastian Vael of Starkhaven.
