Personal history

Spoiler: Campaign 1
Isabela was born along Rivain's northern peninsula in the coastal city of Kont-Aar. When the goliaths first brought ships to Rivain, they landed in Kont-Aar. Despite the goliaths leaving the country later in history, a respectable number of humans who lived around the northern peninsula had already willingly converted to the way of the Qun. Isabela's parents were a part of this group and during her childhood she saw her parents accept her less and less as she showed defiance to the idea of the Qun. Her parents converted as they grew more disillusioned with their role in society as well as the poverty and suffering found around them.   Isabela's parents, not wishing to deal with her, sold her to an Antivan merchant prince who had close ties to the Crows. According to Isabela, she was sold away for nothing more than the promise she would be looked after.   This merchant prince, Luis, was a rich man. He bought Isabela many fine things and hired a tutor to teach her to read and write, but the marriage was loveless and she was treated as his "plaything." It is from Luis, that Isabela actually received her name, which translates to "little beauty". Though Isabela enjoyed the first few months of her life with Luis, she quickly became bored, and then angry when it became clear she was expected to act as "befitted the lady of the house". After a year, Isabela began to deliberately antagonize him.   Isabela would abridge much of her story between this point and when she became captain of the Siren's Call. While working with the Felicisima Armada, she mostly dealt with the smuggling of goods such as lyrium, helping people flee away from a nation's capture, and to participate in other illegal activities. However, she was eventually given a task by one of the more notable pirates named Castillon. He had her smuggling goods to Kirkwall, and during her voyage there she found that the goods were actually slaves. Enraged by such a thing, she let all the slaves go. When Castillon found out, he brought some of the other pirates against her. It was either her life, or she hunted down a Qun dreadnaught ship that was seen off the coast of the southern Free Marches. She gladly took the offer, only to get her into a whole mess of trouble. This lead to the Arishok, the captain of that ship, having to stay in Denerim "while his ship repaired".   Valdris Kai'teih, a member of the Wardens, had pursued Isabela in an attempt to retrieve Qunari relics that he had learned Isabela was in possession of. It was in a chance encounter in Val Royeaux that the Valdris and her met face-to-face. During an Orlesian ball, Isabela had anticipated to hand off the relics to a Duke Gaspard. Several members of the Wardens intercepted this meeting, broke up the ball, and fled with Isabela with what she recalls as them giving her the choice to die or to come with them. She agreed, not wanting to die.   Castillon's goal for Isabela in attacking the Qunari dreadnought was for her to steal a tome of legendary import as well as a ring that is most precious to their people. She was able to acquire both when attacking the dreadnought, but escaping with both became troublesome. The Siren's Call was trailed by the dreadnought into the reefs off of Ferelden's coast. The Siren's Call was utterly destroyed. The dreadnought had to have an emergency docking into Denerim. Isabela, during these moments of craziness, jumped off the boat of the dreadnought and swam to shore with what little she had. To her knowledge, all of her crew died. She added this as yet another reason to hate the Qunari.   While discussing with Valdris about the future of Rivain, Isabela made Valdris agree that by helping him now, he would have to help her later in taking naval warfare to Castillon and bringing the Felicisima Armada under Isabela's control. Unfortunately for Isabela, Valdris died during the fight against the Jrid towards the end of the Ferelden Civil War. Knowing she no longer had the muscle to bite back at Castillon, she disappeared from the Wardens side and hasn't been heard from since.
