The Fallen
The Fallen were a group of knights gathered from across the Free Marches to oppose Orlesian expansionist efforts long ago. They dissolved many, many years ago.
History
There is a legend in the Free Marches regarding "the Fallen". During the ages where Orlais was led by expansionist rulers, a cadre of knights from various Marcher cities formed to fight the growing power of Orlais.
To the Orlesians, these knights were little better than bandits. In Orlesian culture, the Fallen's history has been reduced to a minor footnote in the great tomes filled by its emperors and empresses. To Free Marchers, the Fallen were heroes; they were warriors that fought for freedom and autonomy.
Most, if not all, of the Fallen died in the Fields of Ghislain while defending Nevarra from Orlesian encroachment. On foot, they held the line against a mounted chevalier charge just long enough for the Van Markham family to retreat deeper into their own lines. Many of the Van Markhams narrowly avoided being massacred that day, but it came at the cost of the entire Fallen.
Their memory still lives on in the households of many Free Marchers, but is rarely spoken about in Nevarra.
