Kenotate

The Kenotate (剣と盾) (/kʰɛnotaːteɪ/) are both the military and the primary peacekeeping organization of the Rhegar Empire. Their name translates directly into common as Sword and Shield. Their base of operations is the capital city, Meiliang, where an entire district is dedicated to their living and training facilities.

Description

The Kenotate is by far the largest armed force on Thesilae, with a massive 45,300 members as of 126 LE. They are commanded by the Lao-Tengzhai, with the Daisho serving as the figurehead of their organization.   The land forces of the Kenotate primarily wear dark lamellar armor complete with a open-faced helmet. The vast majority of these soldiers wear black clothing beneath their armor, but the hundred highest-ranking generals wear an otherwise identical set of white clothes instead. Their trousers are wide-legged, but wrapped tight around the calves to allow for freedom-of-movement. The navy also wears lamellar, but their armor is laquered a deep blue. All members are trained with a vast array of weaponry including swords, polearms, and bows.

Members

Members of the Kenotate begin their training at as young as 13 years of age, but do not see active service until reaching the legal age of adulthood in the Empire, which is 23. Until then, they are expected to serve as attendants to older members of the Kenotate, a role which is to be treated with the utmost seriousness. To be selected for service by the Lao-Tengzhai is considered a great honor among loyal Rhegarans, almost as if they had been chosen by the gods.

History

Rumblings of a New Era

After the fall of the Psionic Scourge during the Age of Eclipse, the haphazardly-formed rebel armies of the mortal peoples on Suyia dissolved. Small nations cropped up across the continent's habitable lands, primarily along the rivers and around the great Hailanbao Sea in the west, but very few established new militaries to protect their territories with. It was generally believed during this time that, with the Scourge defeated, all of Thesilae would live in peace, defined by their shared history. This was proved untrue, however, as the warriors of the Rhegar Empire began to sweep across the continent and conquer its neighbors. These warriors would serve as the first members of the Kenotate, which was not officially named until the year 37 LE.

Note: The titles and names of the Rhegar Empire are often derived from what little memory the humans of Thesilae have of their ancient languages. Thus there is a mixture of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and sometimes other East Asian words used, some of which have been unknowingly mistranslated by Rhegarans.
