Murgres (mer-gress)

Murgres is the ancestral home of House Delauney, the ruling family of the County of Raymor. The current head of the family and Count of Raymor is Guy Delauney. Guy has an official residence within the city walls of the City of Raymor, but spends as much time as he is able at his family estate.   "Murgres" literally means "gray wall" in Arian, and as it was a nickname of sorts for the original tower keep, the name has stuck with the site for more than seven centuries.

Purpose / Function

An ancient tower keep and ancestral home of the Delauney family.

Architecture

Built of local gray basalt rock, Murgres has thick, high walls and tall peaked roofs on the towers.  Windows are narrow but glazed on the upper floors.  It is a small house, but there are newer out-buildings able to house guests when the need arises.

Defenses

A strong double gate, walls 18' thick and 24' high with three large, tall towers.  Garrisoned with 80 men-at-arms and another 28 Lancer knights.

History

The orginal tower was built nearly 700 years ago by Laugnay the Tall, the first Count of Raymor, but little of that original structure remains today.  Some sections of wall, a portion of the kitchens and the cellars are all that really remain of the 700-year-old fortress.  Guy's father Enzo spent a sizable fortune on the keep and made it into the small but very confortable house that it is today.
