Calalith

Located on the Western half of The Great Namilli Plains, Calalith is the capital of Salt Reach. To the north is the shore of the Inlet of Oros, so close that the inhabitants of Calalith can smell the salty air. The salt trade is big for many, and is how the city got started. The city is sectioned off into districts, and there is a lot of class discrimination. Under the city is an extensive sewer system that has been converted by the dragosaurs into elaborate living spaces. There are secret entrances all around Calalith, but only the dragosaurs know for sure where all are.

Demographics

Government

The human head of the city is only a figurehead. Everyone in Salt Reach knows the true rulers are the City clan of dragosaurs who live beneath the city.

Industry & Trade

Salt is a huge trade industry here.

Infrastructure

Due to fears of infection, stink, and dirtiness, Calalith was rebuilt with a sewer system. Most houses have internal toilets, and a few rich inhabitants even have running hot water. The system is quite vast, due to being built to allow humans to walk around, and this reason allowed the sewers to become the home of the dragosaurs that now live under the city.

History

Calalith got its start from entrepenural farmers who traded with the Merfolk who frequented the Inlet of Oros. The merfolk had a taste for land vegetables, and the humans needed salt. The farmers soon started trading with others along the caravan trails, and the area became known Salt Reach. The growing need for salt made all those who lived in Calalith grow very rich, very quickly. The vast riches naturally attracted the seedy sort of people, and as the city grew, so did the black market. The population of the city grew rapidly, so fast that they encountered many issues with their sewage. It got so bad that the richest families hired dwarven architects to build a state-of-the-art sewage system under the city, one that would hold up against time and not allow the city to sink. Being dwarves, their architecture holds up to this day.   When minor skirmishes between Reaches started to break out, the leaders of Calalith wanted no part except to defend their current borders. However, radicals combined with influence by the Sphinxes made them eventually join in the War in a most spectacular way. The inhabitants of the Salt Reach were more war-minded; in fact, a lot of those who were touched by Chalybs, the element of metal were inhabitants of Salt Reach; and Firestone Reach had many magicians. The Firestone-Salt Reach Battle had more deaths than the rest of the war combined, and convinced Arch Ignacia to kick the Sphinxes off her continent.   After Septentrionalis was reopened, a pack of dragosaurs settled in an abandoned town close to Calalith. As their numbers increased, and they found themselves visiting Calalith's black market more and more, the dragosaurs eventually permanently moved into the sewar system of the city, setting up elaborate abodes there. They adapted quite well to city life, eventually becoming the City clan of dragosaurs. Their influence there eventually allowed them to take over the black market, and it was only inevitable that they would become the secret rulers of the city and the Reach. Most of the common folk don't know dragosaurs are actually ruling their Reach, but anyone with any monetary influence does.

Architecture

Many of the more permanent houses were built when the sewer system was built, utilizing the same stone the dwarves used to build the sewer system. Shanty towns that popped up next to the city were eventually integrated into the city itself, and those homes became the somewhat less permanent wood buildings seen at the edge of town.
