Nerat
Nerat is a large town on the northern part of the Western Peninusla. It is within the Noor Province.
It's primary reason for foundation was as a processing town for Bark and Sap, which come to it from small mining villages around its periphery. From here, it is sent to Noor to be finally processed and traded out.
It is what is known as a 'Satellite Town' of Noor.
Demographics
Most of the inhabitants of Nerat are humans who hail from the Western Peninsula. It is situated in the inhospitable lowlands of the peninsula, where life is hard and dangerous, and doesn't attract many visitors. Although wealth flow through the town is considerable, the more wealthy side of the population are upper middle class generally, as anyone with more money lives in the slightly safer high areas.
There is a large professional contingent there, as need for blacksmiths and woodworkers is great - the transport of large amounts of invaluable resource has created a need for weapons, armour and heavy caravans.
Government
The town, like most small towns and villages in the peninsula, is run by a local council of elected officials, each representing the different aspects of life in the town: Crafting, resource, mining, military and arts. The Merchant Guild always hold a representative on these councils.
Defences
The defence of the town is mainly the remit of the Noori Guard, the army of the Noor Province. They are led by Captain Sol, who co-ordinates defence of all small towns in the Nerati area.
The town itself is surrounded by wooden walls, although houses have spilled out over onto the land outside the walls.
Industry & Trade
The primary remit of Nerat is the processing and packaging of Bark and Sap from Berstock trees, readying it for delivery to Noor where it is finished and distributed world-wide. It is one of the many towns in the area which serve this function.
The bark and sap itself comes here directly from the small mining villiages on its periphery, where the miners of the Berstock trees gather the resource on the front line.
Assets
Despite its moderate appearance, Nerat is a place of considerable wealth, as are most towns in the peninsula. Their food stores are readily repleted, and not many go hungry.
Guilds and Factions
The Merchant Guild, an organisation tasked with the movement and sale of bark and sap worldwide, have a presence here as they do in all processing towns. The guild are directly controlled by the crown, rather than by the individual governors. All political seats in any town or village throughout the peninsula is likely to have a non-elected guild 'representative'.
History
Nerat was built along with the rest of the Sampalan Kingdom, for the primary purpose of the processing of bark and sap.
Most of their history has been quiet, with no significant conflict. Even during the rise of the Thraxan empire, the peninsula remained completely untouched.
Recently however, there have been more co-ordinated attacks by the various denizens of the surrounding forests. Previously, these attacks had been from small groups who seemed disorganised and disparate. In the last few months however, they have become co-ordinated and often devastating. Worryingly, the presence of a cult of Orcus has made an appearance around the town recently.
