The Merchant Guild

Set up by King Gredan Sampala (great grandfather of incumbent King Guster Sampala II and founder of the kingdom), the merchant guild was established as production and export of bark and sap increased exponentially.
They are soley responsible for co-ordinating mining efforts including expansion into new areas of forest, provision of miners and their pay, as well as transport, processing and trade through Timor.   They are directly accountable to the Royal Family, and although they work closely with the Governors of the satellite cities, they are not part of the same organisation.

Structure

Ivan Provost is the head of the guild, and he resides in Warres where he regularly attends council with the King.
Most of the work, however, is delegated to guild representatives in the satellite cities - who attend councils there and co-ordinate mining efforts.   The guild is huge and sprawling, with multiple departments of each domain of the operation in each city, with some times far reaching hierarchies down to the miners at the face of the trees.

Assets

The guild's main asset is, of course, the bark and sap which they mine and trade. They are exceptionally wealthy from this trade, but the royal accountants demand strict auditable trails and records of all money made.

History

Formed in 1758 by King Gredan, to oversee trade of bark and sap. Primarily before this it was handled by specific people appointed by the King, but as the operation grew more and more people needed hired, and the crown wanted to delegate some of this responsibility.
It is a well known fact that profits and product go missing from time to time, often in small quantities at a time, difficult to trace - something which has always grated on the incumbent Sampala monarch. They have long tried to curtail this with variable levels of royal oversight, but have always failed.   The young King Guster's most recent attempt is the most heavy handed and aggressive to date - he oversaw the formation of The Inquisitors, a royal organisation devoted to investigation (and often summary trial) of people involved in corruption around trade. This move has provoked significant consternation from the guild and it's associates, especially as the inquisitors are rumoured not to concern themselves with important aspects of an investigation - such as evidence.
