The Nine Hells

The Plane of the Gods & Archdevils of Lawful Evil

The Nine Hells is thought to be one of the outer planes, where evil gods rule over their devils and archdevils, who continually vie for power amongst themselves - much of which comes from their ability to influence and take the souls of the living.
Like the other outer planes (Celestia, Arcadia, and The Abyss), nobody alive is ever known to have visited it, although some claim to know of it through their dealings with the gods, or the denizens of the hells themselves. There is, notably, a remarkable amount of consistency in accounts given through the ages of the nine hells, lending some credence to the idea that the stories are, at least in part, true.
The 'nine hells' are aranged as nine circles, each a demi-plane in it's own right, and each ruled by a different archdevil or deity representing the sins which earn souls their places there. The circles are rumoured to be:
1 - Avernus
2 - Lust
3 - Gluttony
4 - Greed
5 - Wrath
6 - Heresy
7 - Violence
8 - Fraud
9 - Treachery
The ruler of the nine hells is said to be Sargonnas, once a close confidant and lieutenant of Paladine. His existence is disputed.
Some claim that the Devils of The Nine Hells are locked in an endless, bloody war with the Demons of The Abyss, a plane connected to The Nine Hells by the River Styx. Legend suggests that the two have a much deeper hatred for each other than the do for the inhabitants of the material plane.
