Mald Empire
The Mald Empire is one of life. It is the only current empire that is ruled by the Elves, and though they do not know it in the current era, it’s royal lineage dates back to before the Great Cataclysm and the Fall. The lands of the Mald Empire are heavily forested, with some areas closely linked to the Fey realms. The founding of the Empire was done by Tio Blackblade Though he knew he was the last surviving of the ancient royal bloodline, he kept this secret, knowing that it would harm his cause if he were to rebuild the elven kingdom, initially founding a small city on the southern coast.
From his city, he led justly, helping to protect those of lower standings, creating a well rounded society. The other villages that surrounded The town of Mald saw it prospering, and so pledged allegiance to him, and his kingdom grew. 150 years after the Fall, came his first major test. Three other minor nations around his went to war with each other, each hoping to grow powerful enough to dominate the region. Knowing that war would soon come to his lands as well, he prepared, and 5 years later, his armies marched. Tio then became known as a great strategist, never once losing a battle. After taking these initial conquests under his wing, his power grew, and there was great prosperity throughout the lands.
In the year of 407 AF, he had his first clash with the undead of Mavaria. And while he saw them as an affront to all that the elves stood for, he found his first defeats. In the end, after a brutal conflict that lasted the better part of 30 years, a truce was signed. Not long after Tio passed away to walk the lonely path, leaving the crown to his daughter, Malvithine.
Malvathine was well educated, and continued what her father had initially set out to do, bring peace, order and prosperity to the lands south of Mavaria, all the time watching the undead menace for any sign that the truce would end. In the year of 740 AF, Malvathine would conquer the last remaining independent nation on the southern edge of the continent. In the year of 974 AF, she would meet her end from an assassin who once worked for this last nation, hoping to spark a revolution. However, this assassination would have unforseen consequences.
Following the assassination, there was a dispute over who should receive the crown between two twins. Each thought the crown rightfully belonged to them, and thus the dispute turned into a full-scale civil war. The Brother who lost this war, Prince Sylyvar Blackblade, was exiled. He traveled with what remained of his loyal army across the Dorfell depths to the other continent, to eventually settle as a mercenary group after a few hundred years of traveling the lands. The Sister, Sionia Blackblade remained and had to work hard to repair the distraught Empire. Sensing the weakness, Mavaria invaded, taking a large chunk of the northern coastline, before Sionia was able to mount any form of defense. Once again, another bloody war ensued, ending in a peace treaty where the Mavaria ended up keeping most of the land they had taken.
The Mald Empire fell into a centuries-long period of tentative peace and rebuilding. They did not recover to the state in which they were once at until some time in the 14th Century. News from across the Dorfell Depths reached the Queen that her brother Sylyvar had fallen in battle and that her nephew who she had never met before had taken his place. Sonia wept, for in her later years she had wished to somehow reconcile with her brother, but had never gotten the chance. Soon after, in the year of 1532 AF, she too began her journey down the lonely path.
In her place, her son, Vulmar was crowned the new Emperor. Vulmar is not like his predecessors, and has no real interest in the running of the Empire. The thing that he most cares about is riding the country of the northern menace, and as such he has spent the better part of his rule growing the nation’s army to be one of the most formidable fighting forces in the world. In 1970 AF, he began marching to the border, and has ever since been locked in a brutal war with the country, with no signs of surrender from either side.
