Daland (Dale-land)
The "Kingdom of The Dale", or Daland for short, is a feudal monarchy in the North of Tirros, renowned for its Knights, Castles and Fine Ale.
Geography
The landscape and climate of Daland is neither mild more forgiving, and the winters, particularly in the Northmark, can be harsh and cold. Daland rests within a valley (hence the name "Dale") region between the Greyspine and Stormpeak Mountain ranges, which greatly defines its geographical features, such as the more mountainous "Highdale" and the wetter "Lowdale."Regions
Highdale
To the west near the Greyspine mountains, Highdale is a higher elevation region with rocky terrain, mountains and hills, and coniferous forests. Several large hill regions are found here including the Highdale Hills and Boar Hills, as well as the mysterious Silverbark Wood which is avoided by most and rumored to be home to fearsome monsters.Lowdale
Towards the base of the valley is the Lowdale region, with the River Bryn winding its way along its lowest elevation down towards Waycliffe. The Lowdale is home to most of the settlements and farmland in Daland. The runoff from the Mountains forms the Bridgeborn Swamp and small forested patches such as the Bricklewood and Montside Wood have been extensively cleared back for settlement and lumber.King's Notch
The eastern tip of Daland, a cliffy peninsula extending beyond the Stormpeaks into the Inner Sea. The capital city of Whitestone and the port of Ponton crown this region.Northmark
Northmark is the furthest northern marches of Daland, established primarily to guard against dangers from the North. A cold region guarded by three large watch-keeps, Birchwood Keep, Crow's Watch, and Hardwall Keep. The wolf packs of Northmark, particularly of the Fangwood, are known to be dangerous.Society
Dalish society is divided into a feudal system of five classes. As a feudal nation, all land in The Dale belongs to the King. Estates are granted to lords, who in turn parcel it out to Tenets. All landowners, Tenets and Lords, are obligated to work, pay taxes, and provide military service to the Crown.Peasants
All those of common blood. Peasants may be farmers, laborers, craftsmen, and more.Knights
Knights are the lowest rung of the noble class, though technically a Lord is still a knight, albeit of a higher rank. Knights are allotted smaller portions of a lord's land as their own. A male knight is addressed as "Sir" and a female as "Dame." Young noblemen serve as a squire under a Knight for many years, gaining the training and experience to become Knights themselves. The title itself can only be bestowed by the King himself, during a special Knighting ceremony.Lords
The Lords and Ladies are the highest rank of knights, consisting of fifteen noble lineages. Lords swear fealty to the monarchy, and were obligated to pledge a certain number of men in times of war. Lords parcel out their land to tenets, who in turn are obligated to work for them and pay taxes.King
The King or Queen is the monarchal ruler of Daland.Military
Being a true feudalistic society, Daland has no centralized military. Instead the Noble Class, the Dalish Knights serve as the defenders of the common folk. Each Lord raises their own troops from the common class, and is required to pledge a certain amount of troops to the King in times of war.Knights
The Dalish Knights are renowned throughout the Inner Sea and beyond, a symbol of bravery and warrior skill. Knights are a class in and of themselves, the lowest tier of Nobility who swear their allegience to Lords, and hold lands and titles under them. Dalish Knights typically wear long chainmail hauberks, covered by a surcoat decorated with their personal, or their Lord's, Coat of Arms. They also wear steel great-helms, and carry a range of weapons, most commonly polearms, shield and arming sword, or longsword.Men at Arms
The common folk soldiers obligated to fight under their Lord. At most times these positions are filled by volunteers. However in times of war all young able-bodied men are expected to serve as Men at Arms. They are typically outfitted with chain hauberks or gambeson, as well as shields, spears and smaller domed helmets.
