Monarch

Ain't it weird, how half these weirdos never earn their leadership? I'm not saying I think the president is worth the position, absolutely not, but at least the people all made a mistake about it. Those monarchs get to keep on doing their nonsense and the people can't do anything except, well. You know.
— Muhepásines political commentator
Monarchs are the heads of state and occasionally heads of government in many countries across Tiyu Amara. Prominent historically in some of the largest and most important countries, in modern times less than half of countries are ruled by a monarch, as part of a gradual trend towards democracy and states as republics. However, it is unlikely that this form of leadership will disappear entirely, with some monarchies having endured for centuries if not millenia.

History

Rule by a monarch is among some of the earliest documented government systems in Tiyu Amara, and has often been the one utilised by the most prominent countries in a given era. These important states are often directly the cause for others to acquire similar leadership, either by achieving independence from their parent or inspiring copying from neighbours.   In Abravost, this original monarchy was that of the Vosti Empire, itself likely descending from a smaller local leadership. By its conquest of the majority of the continent, excepting the lands east of the Krenar Mountains, it spread its system of governance throughout. While the first countries to become independent from it, Skarhu and Waal Zaimyatl, would deliberately lean into new democratic ideas, the northern Telziad kingdom would position itself as a rival to the throne, with their first king being a Vosti duke.   In Thurásin, the complex political melting pot resulted in monarchies occuring in geographically distant places without any connection to each other, but nevertheless some countries would prove inspirational to and influential on their surrounds. The Urisoril Empire would follow a similar trajectory to the Vosti Empire, conquering large territory and, in its slow collapse, leave behind local leaders trying to hold onto its power and influence, allowing some royals to endure. Even in its immediate wake, at least two states (Ettioril and Muhepásin) claimed direct descent from its monarchy for many years.   Elsewhere, kingdoms like Kuwvyana and Varrzaxadh proved influential in their local areas, with the former directly resulting in the monarchies in Vyanutiqu and Ijwavya. States such as Zdärrözadh in Thurásin's south also had great influence, enough to survive over a century of Urisoril's rule and inspiring others to stand up, before its permanent conquest and division by Ozäxa-Lavüdh. Even in that instance, its monarchy was permitted to endure through the newly formed Sambogen.

Nousetl Meyámii

A state predating The Collision, Nousetl Meyámii nominally fell within the borders of modern-day Waal Zaimyatl. Existing for hundred years, it was physically destroyed in the Collision, and its monarchy extinguished.   The last ruler was Queen Noininou

Thurásin

Empire of Ettioril

A long standing presence on Thurásin's eastern coast, it has been overthrown and restored multiple times, with not every dynasty connected to its predecessor. Most recently abolished in 11 Disturbance and replaced with a republic.   The last ruler was Empress Urishem

Kingdom of Ijwavya

An absolute monarchy in Thurásin's north west, Ijwavya had endured by presenting itself as the last line of defence against an expansionist north. It failed, however, to defend itself from its own outraged populace, who overthrew the monarchy in 42 Famine.   The last ruler was King Loqadum III

Kingdom of Na-ochiixid

An absolute monarchy on the west bank of Lake Strelish, it was first overthrown in 21 Collision, before being restored and once again overthrown in 51 Growth. Currently, Na-ochiixid is a republic.   The last ruler was King Bogako V. Royal interests are represented by Dhöko "Sunny" Kostrothe

The Shyanhol League

A confederation in the east seas, the Shyanhol League functionally operates as 6 separate countries, each governed by a hereditary clan leader that could reasonably be called a monarch. Due to misunderstandings, the leader of the Chwishatekyutin clan is often referred to as the King of Shyanhol, despite having no special precedence over their peers.   The current rulers are the Chosins Hilun Ron Chwishatekyutin, Nutwi Ron Riklashuyol, Rilen Ron Wisrowensa, Tsinen Ron Nu'otinhol, Keshal Ron Sulanyeshyutin, and Eshya Ron Wokru'ol

Urisoril Empire

An absolute monarchy that, at its peak, stretched from Thurásin's east to west coast along swaths of the south. Claiming descent from the legendary First Empress, it was slowly torn apart by rebellion and separatist movements, dissolving in 88 Collapse.   The last ruler was Empress Shehem

Magocracy of Üükabwi-adh

A country ruled by mages, with their leader selected according to tenure in the governing Mage Council. While not strictly hereditary, the automatic way succession usually occurs, and the clear rules governing it, make the Grand Mage of Üükabwi-adh a not-distant equivalent to a monarch.   The current ruler is Grand Mage Xidoth Hidzötslaz, with the heir apparent being Minister Dhiiba Glöthe

Kingdom of Varrzaxadh

An enduring state in various forms in central Thurásin, Varrzaxadh had made a gradual transition into a constitutional monarchy. In 39 Return, its king decided to abdicate for himself and his heirs, transforming the state into a republic.   The last ruler was King Xauko XI Varrzothe

Kingdom of Xiy Kiiquldast

A diarchy in the far north, Xiy Kiiquldast's realm stretched across the many frozen isles. It was an absolute leadership, though in practice highly decentralised to regional governors, who largely claimed independence when the capital island was lost during the Collision.   The last rulers were Queen Qyiindu and Queen Yuvul

Zdärrözadh

An absolute monarchy destroyed by Urisoril and later restored, Zdärrözadh was a fixture along the River Tsädh until the Central War erupted over the matter of its succession. At the war's conclusion its territory was divided amongst various participants and competing factions.   The last ruler was King Xauvis, who became King Xauvis I of Sambogen

Zhrayqarnyu

A country from Tiyu Noha predating the Collision, Zhrayqarnyu's leaders claim their authority directly from the Divinity of Wisdom, even directly conferring with them. While essentially a monarch, the prominence of the spiritual aspect and the not-necessarily hereditary nature of succession has it considered as an equivalent but not identical position.   The current ruler is Ro'aqlen Ikensa IV
