Ice Pine (ick-TEE-kawl)

The ik'ti'kal - or "Ice Pine" - is the main tree species that makes up the boreal forest on Ikrat. Though there are a few groves in Dumu, they are not as plentiful as at the north pole.   The Ice Shadow Tirava choose a new location for their villages each year based on how old the grove of Ice Pine are. They only choose old trees because they are tall enough to shelter the giant stature of the tirava, but also because the trees only fruit at the end of their lives which produces a food source.   The Ice Pine trunks are used as support beams, which the tirava then stack bricks, called ch'ikrea, between to make the walls of their lik'krea. They then weave the tree's extra long branches together to make the roofing. The branches are woven so tightly that any new snow that falls creates a thick, insulated roof overhead.   Some trees are kept inside the homes so that the warmth from the fires encourages iceberries to grow on the limbs, which help sustain the tirava through the long, COLD SEASON. Some berries are fermented to make iceberry liquer and some are eaten. When they are done with the berries, they throw the seeds on the ground, which - after getting stomped into the soil by their giant feet - germinate and begin to grow to replace the trees cut down during the Fire Harvest.
