lik'krea (lyk-KRAY-uh)

The dwellings of the Ice Shadow Tirava in Ikrat.   During the WARM SEASON, the snow melts slightly during the day and then freezes again at night. Over the course of the season, this causes the snow to be solid and compact enough to use as bricks, called ch'ikrea, for the upcoming winter's housing. The tirava choose a new location each year for the village based on how old the grove of Ice Pine are. They only choose old trees because they are tall enough to shelter the giant stature of the tirava, but also because Ikrati boreal trees only fruit at the end of their lives producing a food source (see below).   Using the trees as support beams, the tirava stack the bricks to make the walls and then weave the tree's extra long branches together to make the roofing. The branches are woven so tightly that any new snow that falls creates a thick, insulated roof overhead.   All homes are built keeping trees inside of them. The warmth from the fires encourage iceberries to grow on the limbs which help sustain the tirava through the long, COLD SEASON. Some are fermented to make iceberry liquer and some are eaten. When they are done eating the berries, they throw the seeds on the ground, which - after getting stomped into the soil by their giant feet - germinate and begin to grow to replace the trees cut down during the Fire Harvest.
