The Far Realm is a place of madness which is believed to lie beyond the stars. Whereas most mages and those in the know on
Tol refer to the
Astral Sea as being fundamentally “up” and the
Elemental Chaos and
Abyss as being fundamentally “down”, the Far Realm is being described as being fundamentally “outside”. It is the origin point for many strange creatures, collectively called
Aberrations, that seem to threaten the safety and sanity of the inhabitants of Tol. These include such horrors as Aboleths,
Beholders, Grell, and the terrible
Illithid, amongst others.
