Duchy of Kirsvald
Blessed of Veloria
Kirsvald is the central-most country of the Ivory Duchies and perhaps best exemplifies that organization in spirit. It is an accepting, diverse, and prosperous country that welcomes visitors, ruled by a fair-handed Duke that comes from a long line of like-minded rulers. The dwarven city of Glitterhame and the fey Triskele Forest are both located within it's border, as is the adventuring guild known as the Staufendorf Liberators.
Structure
Kirsvald is ruled by the Argent Duke. The duke's court consists of a chancellor who advises the duke on religious matters, a castellan who advises a duke on matters of security, a court officer who oversees orderly conduct in the duke's court, a vizier who advises the duke on matters of magic and law, a duchal envoy who advises the duke on matters of foreign relations, and the various barons of the duchy which are appointed by the duke.
Every barony has a seat of power, usually the largest settlement within that barony's borders, that is governed by a mayor. Each barony's mayoral seat and sheriff are appointed by the baron.
History
The history of Kirsvald begins with the founding of her capital, Silverus. The city was founded just over 2,500 years ago by the dwarves under the legendary High Smith Durgeddin Ironweave. Though the dwarves bequeathed the city to humankind some 600 years ago, the city retains a strong dwarven cultural presence, as seen in the city’s pride and the skill of the city’s celebrated brewers, metal-workers, and gemsmiths.
The oldest stories and books hint at an even older history, though, and an unspeakable horror dwelling in darkness below the lands of Kirsvald. This terrible presence is thought by some to be the cause of the high rates of madness, illness, and curses that can be found throughout the duchy.
Demography and Population
Kirsvald is about 70% human, 10% smallfolk, 10% gaian, and 10% other species. Thanks to the fey in the Triskele Forest it is also a strongly magical land, with many druids, sorcerers, and wizards among its folk.
The smallfolk generally live in Glitterhame and the Triskele Forest, staying in the northwestern and northern parts of the country. The rest of the populace tend to congregate in the capital of Silverus and other settlements along the coast and rivers.
Territories
The lands of Kirsvald have belonged to the duchy since the dwarves built Silverus around 3000 years ago. As humans fled those that preyed on them north and south of Kirsvald to the dwarven stronghold, their population grew to eventually eclipse the original dwarven Ironweave clan.
Military
Kirsvald can field an army of 5000 regulars, 4000 irregulars, and 1000 knights and cavalry. In addition the Ivory Knights of Silverus, and the Jade Tower of the Antiquity Scholars, provide specialist support as needed. The duchy's navy primarily consists of 20 carracks and 40 caravels.
Religion
All religions are tolerated in Kirsvald except those of an evil nature. However, the official religion of Kirsvald is Therianity. Those who profess not to follow any religion are looked at with suspicion, and are often mistaken as agents of the Faerie King.
Foreign Relations
Kirsvald has a generally open attitude toward so-called 'reasonable and peasceful' countries and organizations. It believes that deals should be fair for all parties, and that the best alliances are bigger than the sum of their parts.
Agriculture & Industry
Kirsvald has a diverse economy consisting of a strong mineral and mineral goods industry at Glitterhame and other places along the Towers Mountains, fields of flax, barley, oats, beets, potatoes, tomatoes, and similar crops among the hills, controlled lumber production in approved areas of the Triskele Forest (though nothing like the lumberyards of Elaysm, and a strong aquaculture industry along its waterways.
Trade & Transport
There are three main transportation routes through Kirsvald, two that go north-south and one that extends westward from Silverus. The mighty Aiglar River and the Ivory Road both stretch from Kirsvald's southern border through most, if not all, of the duchy. While the Aiglar eventually wends its way into the Towers, the Ivory Road continues past the northern border of the duchy, connecting it to its northern sister provinces. The Ironway connects Glitterhame to Silverus, bisecting the duchy horizontally.
