Kingdom of Alterin

Government

A kingdom is generally made up of a people with a relationship of loyalty to its king. The king or queen is the sovereign of all the people in ALterin. Serving as a figure of authority and reference for the people, the king is also the supreme commander of the armies and has the final say in the politics of the country.   The king's influence and power in Alterin was extremely important, by design of its first king David Lionheart who wanted to rule with an iron fist over the newly conquered lands.  

Noble hierarchy

The dukes and lords of each region being in charge of enforcing the king's orders and missives. The Noble hierarchy goes as follows:

  • Duke: possessor of a duchy
  • Lord: possessor of a lordship

  • Count
  • Viscount
  • Banneret (knight and squire)
  • Baron

Culture

The people of Alterin were proud and strong spirited, believing themselves to be the proud conqueror of this land. Alterin was a kingdom composed mostly of human, and orcs, ogre and goblinoids were hunted and killed on sight.  

Last rites

One of the customs of the kingdom was to bury its kings and queens in grand tombs, known as krypts. These krypts were grandiose structures, built in honor of the ancient leaders and adorned with intricate decorations.   To ensure the protection of these tombs for eternity, the kingdom would sacrifice servants of the sovereign, turning them into undead, mostly skeletons, to act as guardians of the tomb. These krypts were filled with puzzles and traps, designed to keep the undead inside and protect the tomb, but often times these traps were quite simple to overcome, as their primary function was to keep the undead inside and not intruders out.

Conflicts

The Orrin empire was the former home of the human from Alterin, but because of David's betrayal, separated fromthe empire. This betrayal started a 6 year long war with the empire, a war knwn as the Conqueror's War.  

History

David Lionheart orchestrated the assassination of Orrin empire's emperor, Arthas Hart. With no ruler to command them, those approving of David's view followed, and soon the empire was divised more than ever before. Khagar took the vacant emperor position, and confronted david about his treason, learning the truth about the former emperor assassination, the mage emperor declared war on the newly formed kingdom of Alterin. The resulting war weakened both the kingdom and empire and split the populace into two groups, "royalist" and "Imperialist", labels that continued to spark fights years after the event ended.  
The Declaration of Independence of the Kingdom of Alterin:   When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's gods entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.   We, the people of the Kingdom of Alterin, under the leadership of King David Lionheart, declare our independence from the Orrin Empire, and reject all claims of authority and jurisdiction over our lands and people. We have long suffered under the oppression and tyranny of the Orrin Empire. We have exhausted all peaceful means of redress and have decided to take our fate into our own hands.   We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.   Therefore, the leader of the Kingdom of Alterin, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these lands, solemnly publish and declare, That these United lands are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the Orrin Empire, and that all political connection between them and the Orrin Empire, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent lands, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent lands may of right do.
  After the war, Richard Lionheart became the new ruler in 1168 BD. He grew to be a wise and just ruler, greatly loved by his people. During his reign, he discovered more about his father's deal and plans, including his promise to Tezzeret Thuzad , a powerful wizard who wished to be free to study necromancy. Intrigued, the new king ordered to investigate the wizard, and quickly found out of the Cult of the Damned, a cult led by Tezzeret providing him great resources in his mastery of the dark art. Richard hunted Tezzeret with a troop of elite soldiers, killing him in 1162 BD. Decades later, A new menace came from the south, a terrifying lich, and his army of cultists walked on Alterin, and started to threaten greatly the kingdom's interest. Unbeknown to Richard, it was an evil he created, Tezzeret was resurrected as a lich by his follower and now hoped for a kingdom of his own. Richard died in the battle that followed in 1154 BD, the throne taken by the Lich Tezzeret.   The entire kingdom now under the control of the lich, its realm was regarded as unholy, and the enemies of good by every other realm. Consistent attacks from the other realms and religious organizations weakened Alterin defenses, enabling incursions that led to Tezzeret's defeat. His phylactery was not destroyed, the Cult of the Damned securing it. This led to the rebirth of the lich only a few months after its original defeat, Altering still under his control, yet the wizard did not learn of this experience. In a manner very similar to how he was originally defeated, the champions of the Orrin Empire stormed the citadel and defeated the lich lord once again, destroying the phylactery to in 1132 BD, at least according to the legends.   When Tezzeret Thuzad phylactery was destroyed, it created a power vacuum with several head member of the cult of the damned vying to obtain leadership, including Obino Cadavus. However, he was confident he held the upper hand, for he had discovered how to become a unique kind of lich.   Obino had modified himself to keep the beating heart of his living self while turning his body into the undead form of a lich. The necrosis of his body was held in check by the beating of his heart, the lone living organ in his body. Having perfected the balance of life and death, unlimited possibilities were granted by his newfound authority, until the great extinction threatened his designs...
