Elturel

Elturel, a large, orderly city overlooking the River Chionthar, is filled with merchants, river traders, and farmers’ markets. Its most distinguishing feature is a brilliant magical light that hovers above it, illuminating it day and night. This light is painful to undead and is visible from almost every corner of Elturgard (of which Elturel is the capital), appearing from afar as a star or distant sun.   It's the centre of agriculture and trade in the region, and is renowned for its elite mounted defenders, the Hellriders.

Demographics

Habitants of the city itself are mostly human, though many travellers from all over the Sword Coast do their business here.

Government

The city of Elturgard as a whole is ruled by the High Observer of Torm, a priest named Thavius Kreeg. Aided by a paladin knighthood, the High Observer makes certain that order is maintained in the city and the realm, with the aim of bringing righteous judgment to all the Realms. The streets are safe and well-policed so that the trade and agriculture are run efficiently.

Defences

The city is surrounded by a stout stone wall, shielding all but the southern river side.

Assets

Elturel is the number one city for trades throughout the Sword Coast, if one were to acquire a trinket or special type of fruit this is the right place to do so.

Guilds and Factions

The city is mainly ruled by the Order of the Gauntlet, represented by Ontharr Frume.

Geography

The city is split into two districts: an upper city known as the High District and a lower city known as the Dock District.   The High District spreads over the slopes of a rising, defensible hill with a rocky cliff on its south side, where it meets the Chionthar. In this crowded space, the buildings are constructed of stone, with tall narrow houses topped with spires and bedecked with balconies and windows, and the cobbled streets are narrow, steep, and winding.   The Dock District, meanwhile, covers the flatlands around. It is home to markets, stockyards, and warehouses, as well as wagon-makers and yards and officers of other trades associated with caravans. It is dirty, disorderly, and smelly, with buildings designed only for function and business.
