Ordun's Wetlands

The wetlands around Ordun, which are generally considered to specifically be a bog, have a diverse array of strange plants and small creatures due to the nature of its creation.

Fauna & Flora

Most of the fauna consists of insects and small amphibians and birds. The most interesting part of Ordun's bogs is the wide variety of flora and fungi that are found, with most of the non-poisonous ones having now been identified. While some of the inhabitants seem to be transplanted from the wetlands of Daijo or lakes and rivers of the rest of Candala, some are unique and strange. One of the most well-known outside of Ordun is the aptly named Orberries that grow on long, hardy vines in the middle of bog pools. These are not the only berries to grow in the bogs; many shrubs have berries of varying flavour and effect, some of which are picked to flavour alcohols. The shrubs also serve a dual purpose, with most birds of the bog with their long legs nesting inside them.   There are a number of mosses, fungi and strange grasses that also call the bog their home. While, again, many are somewhat normal for such a location, there are some that have clearly been influenced by the long steeping in dragon magic. There is a certain kind of moss called Crumblecoal by the locals that, when a piece is pulled, gives off a large amount of heat and glows like an ember where the break has occurred. A fair number of the mushrooms that can be found are bioluminescent for some bizarre reason, and a fair amount more are poisonous and cause heavy hallucinations. A couple of the grasses are actually carnivorous: one that draws in insects with a sweet scent and bright petals only for them to stick and be slowly consumed, and another that is larger and creeps into the edge of bog pools, snatching any fish that pull on it's trailing limbs out of the water and letting it rot amongst its roots.

Natural Resources

The most major resource is peat, though the locals are careful to only use what is necessary as it can take a very long time to reform. Otherwise, having converted some of the bogs into fish and fruit farms, the main use of the bogs is for farming and scavenging some of the interesting flora.

History

When Ordun was attacked by a Dragon that breathed scalding water and later lived in the settlement for hundreds of years, the steam and humidity it filled the area with caused near-constant mists and rainfall. In turn, this left the lands surrounding Ordun constantly besieged by rainfall, and the soaking of the land combined with the ambient magic sped up the process of the area becoming a wetland, and also led to some strange effects on the local ecology...
