Types of Wunderstycke and their Powers

Every since Wotan's Call, magic in unbelievable amounts has returned to the world of mortals. Aside from turning people into creatures like the Hamwesen and magical energy enabling the the Gods to interact more with the world than ever before, many items new and old have gained magical power - the mystical Wunderstycke (singular Wunderstyck).

While this article contains many in-world explanations this article also basically provides a guide for a gamemaster or storyteller to create in-world artifacts.

Types of Wunderstycke

Wunderstyck is the broad term for any inanimate object that contains some kind of magical power. Either it has some unusual qualities or it can bestow effects on one or more people. As varied as the possible effects are, so are the possible origins for these magical properties.

Naturwunder - Naturally awakend

The rarest form of wunderstyck just became magical through the magic in the world. These so-called Naturwunder either it were exposed to strong magical energy, were created in a sanctified area or were awakened through strong emotions of a magically gifted person.
Examples
The Bloodwood Bowl grew completely by itself within the Bloodwillow Hain until a skilled Herbwitch was drawn to the item and discovered the prophetic effect by chance.   Creation Hints for Storytellers
The more powerful a Naturwunder is, the more unique, specific or unwieldy it should be.   Naturwunder seldom have sideffects, but the overall effect can be negative.   Stronger powers also should come with one or several of the following drawbacks: Very specific usage or effect, limited usage, increasingly complicated preconditions, difficult to move or modify, obvious way to harm or destroy.

Runenwerke - Runed Wunderstycke

Ancient and Current   Tövereen Runes hold magic in them and especially a Runesmith can imbue effects onto most items. Many words are still unknown to the crafters after Wotan's Call, but there have been many old items and ruins with wonderous words and mysterious effects. As such, Runded Wunderstycke, while following the same principiles, are divided into recent and ancient items.

Wunderwerke - Magically imbued

Some people, especially Hamwesen can wield their own personal magic. Others use ancient arts and other Wunderstycke to wield the magics from a Nexus similar to the gods. Alchemy and Druidic arts also are some form of magic, especially when incorporating plants and materials from magically imbued areas.   All these types of magic can be channeled into an item, be it during their crafting proecess or by using enchantments or rituals at a later date. These types of magic are relatively wild and rarely does an artificially created Wunderwerk do exactly what the creator intended - and the side effects can be erratic.

Asenwerke - Ascended by a god

Gods don't have to concern themselves with waiting for something to grow or etch in some silly runes to create an effect. They can easily create or imbue items with powers they so chose. Of course, the creation of such an item may require the god to be in an area where their influence is strong enough their influence is strong enough, but after creation these effects will last as long as needed.   While some the items can look completely mundane, others cannot conceal their magical glow or the mysterious marks left by the god. In fact, concealing the power is something that needs to be actively chosen for an item when creating it - and it becomes more difficult (or costly) the stronger the powers of the item are.

Potency, rarity and Aura of Wunderstycke

Not every wunderstyck is the same. Some have less power and are almost mundane, if not inspected closely - others are incredibly strong and enable the wielder to perform wonderous feats.   A Wunderstyck with a Simple Aura often only has a single ability that is very specific to the item. An armorplate that is a bit harder, a chisel that cuts through stone easier or a waterbowl that refills itself are examples of this.   An Uncommon Aura is a bit more versatile than a simple Wunderstyck. The abilities often afflict the wearer or a target or it has multiple effects at once that can be cleverly modified. The Bloodwood Bowl is an example, as it has two related but very different visions it can show the user.   When wielding a Wunderstyck with a Potent Aura the effects are often very strong or surprising for the respective item. Imagine a Raven's Feather that can protect a group of people from the storm or the berries from a throny bush that will burst into a large area of flames when thrown, or a blanket that allows a thief to step through a wall, as long as it is thrown over him.   Creation Hints for Storytellers
The type of Aura basically affects the number of points available to spend on the abilities.   The ranges are:
  • Simple - 1 point
  • Uncommon: Between 2 and 3 points
  • Potent: Between 5 and 7 points
  • Mystic: More than 7 points

    Attributing Magical Abillities

    Fourth Wall Warning
From here on, specific mechanics of creation will be discussed.
A Wunderstyck can have any skill or spell that is described in the Savage world guide with any desired trapping. As a guideline, each rank of the chosen ability costs one point. If the Skill or Trapping has any attribute that is listed in the enhancement section, these points do not need to be spent - it is most likely already factored into the rank of the skill or spell.   Additionally, the item can grant a character an edge. The rank of edge does apply as well, but prerequisites can be ignored.

    Enhancements

For additional points, the following attributes can be affected:
  • The effect works not on the item itself (by somehow enhancing it or giving it a special function) but on someone touching it (or being very closeby. Armor does not need to touch skin directly and a weapon can be held with a glove)
  • The effect can be applied on someone in a distance or in an area of effect. Each step in range (short, middle, long) requires one point.
  • The effect can be aplied on multiple people at once
  • The effect can be used more often or more quickly
  • The effect is stronger than the baseform
  • The effect lasts longer - or is permanent if increased four times
  • The effect is passive and constant (use when appropriate)
  • In case of Asenstycke, the item emmanates their power proportional to their Aura. For a point each this effect can be reduced by one level, up to complete concealment.

    Drawbacks

Drawbacks are not malicious abillities but sideffects of the usage of a wunderstyck. With drawbacks you can "grant" the item additional points for their powers.   Each time someone uses the item, there is a 10% chance of the sideffect being triggered.   Similar to powers, these orient themselves on the Hindrances from Savage World. They "grant" half a point for a minor hindrance and a point for a major hindrance. Also give half a point each for any enhancement of the drawback.   Additionally the following modifications are possible for half a point each:
  • Increase the chance of activation by 30% (up to 100%)
  • Change the propabillity into a buildup: After ten uses by a single person, the effect will happen to that person. (less if the chance has been increased)
