Chained Citadel

The headquarters of the Order of the Rod

Purpose / Function

This fortress was built as both a temple and a fortress for the Order of the Rod. It serves as a base for planning campaigns and as the centre of worship for the order.

Architecture

Built of a darker stone than the surrounding town of Mitiris, the citadel towers above the rest of the town, providing a constant reminder of who is in charge. The large blocks of stone used in it's construction would have been ruinously expensive to extract and transport to Mitiris if not for the use of slave labour.   The fortress is seven stories high with multiple layers of cellars and dungeons below. It is built in the shape of a hexagon, with two entrances on opposite sides of the building. The lower floors contain the public rooms, including the temple to Virid, hall of judgement, and the office of the Commander of the town. The mid floors contain barracks, mess, and study areas for members of the order. The upper floors are devoted to housing the upper echelons of the order and in addition to quarters and a private shrine also have a large audience chamber and several rooms dedicated to planning campaigns.

Defenses

The citadel's first line of defence is the town of Mitiris, but though there is no expectation that Mitiris itself could, the order has ensured that the citadel has additional protections.   A 15ft stone wall surrounds the Citadel with a single gate allowing entry inside. Inside this gate are storehouses, a smithy, and other facilities to help esnure the citadel could hold out on it's own for a time. There are no windows on the ground floor of the citadel and with the exception of the windows allowing light into the temple the windows on ther upper floors are arrow slits. Though larger, the windows into the temple do not present a breach in the defences as they have heavy iron bars to prevent anyone getting through.   Catapults are mounted on rails on the roof of the citadel, allowing them to be turned to face different directions with relative ease. During the early days of Mitiris the catapults were used to destroy buildings that weren't in keeping with the design for the town which allowed the engineers to calculate the tensions needed to hit different areas.

Chains of Order
The citadel gets it's name from immense metal chains which decorate it's six walls. Each link is 4ft across and has been enchanted to prevent rust. Each wall has slightly different colour chain, ranging from steel grey to black iron. Each chain represents a different type of restriction imposed by the order to ensure that civilisation can prevail over chaos.   The chains are clearly visible from the sea and images of the citadel with it's chains are used as crest by the order on it's official documents.
