Nulgin Magrannor

King Nulgin Varbar Magrannor

Mental characteristics

Personal history

As the third child of the previous Magrannor, Nulgin never expected to become King of the Magrannor Halls. When his mother the queen began to succumb to ill health, Nulgin made plans to leave the halls as the younger siblings of the ruler of the halls were generally expected to depart after the coronation. His plans were disrupted when his older brother and sister were found dead in the throne room. Despite the way the advisors tried to convey the news of the deaths, it was obvious to most people that there had been a dispute between the older siblings that they had tried to settle with their axes. The news broke the queen's heart and she passed away within a few hours of naming Nulgin as the next king.   Unprepared for being a ruler, Nulgin found himself surrounded by advisors who had gotten used to being able to make their own decisions while the queen had been ill. Unsure of who he could trust amongst his own ministers, Nulgin turned to the army for help. A former officer himself, Nulgin knew of several officers whose judgement he trusted. With the aid of the Honourwatch he set about sweeping out the forge, replacing ministers he was unsure of with officers he trusted. This caused a lot of animosity amongst the noble families, especially the Stonesmiths, due to the embarrassment of relatives being dismissed, and the lost opportunities through the noble families no longer being able to arrange matters to their own advantage.   It is likely that Nulgin would have been removed were it not for the support provided by the Voices of Wisdom. While their support has not prevented several coup attempts, it has meant that the average dwarf has a better opinion of Nulgin than the heads of the other noble families, allowing Nulgin to call on popular support at key moments. Unfortunately for Nulgin, dealing with the traitors in accordance with the law has only served to further fuel the resentment among the nobility.

Education

As the youngest of three siblings Nulgin was taught from an early age that he would have to make his own mark on the world rather than inheriting a position.  He was provided with the best instructors in fighting and crafting and discovered he had a talent for the wielding a warhammer and woodworking.

Morality & Philosophy

Nulgin is a strong traditionalist which makes him popular with both the church and the average members of his clan. His adherence to tradition has sometimes led him to dismiss new ideas or tactics suggested by his officers, but fortunately for them Nulgin's friendship with Shardia Silma has opened his eyes to the fact that there may be other ways of fighting battles.

Social

Family Ties

Nulgin married Gurtrude Battlebeard in order to seal a deal for her clan's support.  They have two children, Bronwyn and Mulldoon.  Though Nulgin has no other immediate family as his parents and siblings have already passed on, there are numerous members of the Magrannors who like to claim a close kinship.  Some of them are even sincere.
