Consular of Arcana

"Look out from this tower at the lands that surround and expand far beyond what you can see with a mundane eye. Do you hear the people that you will serve, protect, influence, and govern? There is a reason why we train you children in far more than the arcane, because as the Emperor's, and the Empire's, Consular to all things arcane you must always understand the precariousness of the title and position you hold. You will serve a man, or men, who, at best, has a minute understanding or use of arcane power and even fewer ways to protect himself against it, thus you will always be valuable and trusted with near absolution as a result... Do you see why that is a problem? Knowing what you know about the winds of magic. Knowing what can be done to a man's feeble mind with little more than a flick of the wrist and a few words? Or what an innocent child could innocuously ask to secure their future in spite of the repercussions? Or what a tyrant would order done to his enemies and the innocent? Or worse still, what you could do to the man that rules over millions and none, but you, would be the wiser? There is a reason that wizard-kings are rare across any form of rulership without a balance in place. Magic is rightfully feared in even its most mundane uses. The skill and knowledge of the arcane you have, limited as it is now, make the power you wield that much more absolute and your words that much more weighted. The Consular of Arcana is a position held by a mage that serves the Emperor of the Salvae Empire, typically one of renown. This mage will often be the person that advises an emperor in arcane matters as well as being an arcane protector and deterrent from hostile, outside magical forces. Many consulars in Ages past would carry on their duties from one emperor to the next, training and grooming their own successor sometimes for decades to prepare them for the task after death eventually takes their mentor.
