Pilgrimite Legionnaire

They are elite fighters and experienced travelers as each of them makes the pilgrimage to Yi’riila as part of their initiation. Despite their prowess, legionnaires usually travel in groups of 11 to ensure victory in their skirmishes against the followers of Chaos or other, unknown entities.   The weapon of choice of most Legionnaires is the Billhook, which is a polearm capable of sweeping the legs of their opponents. They use this weapon to great effect and they specialize in dealing with swift opponents who rely on hit and run attacks. In addition, they are outfitted with plate armor which grants them excellent protection against such enemies.

Equipment

Armor

Every Legionnaire is outfitted with standardized armor that is produced throughout the realm at various locations.
  • As their first layer of protection, each Legionnaire wears a set of padded armor that is hardened to be more resistant to cuts than the average padded armor worn by Patrons. It covers most of their body with an overlapping part similar to that of a Patron's, but the Pilgrimite version is even longer, reaching the ankles of the Legionnaire.
  • Over the padded armor, Legionnaires wear a set of steel and leather plate armor. Steel on their torso and shoulders with leather armor on their hands and feet to provide ease of movement.
  • Each Legionnaire wears a fully enclosed helmet with a visor that can be opened up to offer greater visibility.

Weapons

Each Legionnaire is proficient with the billhook, a polearm that is excellent at pulling their opponent's feet out. They carry this weapon everywhere they go, except when they are resting. Still, they have a one-handed sword as a backup in case their billhook breaks or they are disarmed.

Miscellaneous

Similarly to a Patron, a Legionnaire also carries additional equipment with them when they are on a military campaign. Considering that the Pilgrimite Legion does not use Suppliers, they often need to carry even more.
  • Each Legionnaire is issued a small flask filled with a healing elixir. If the Legionnaire is fatally wounded in battle, a nearby Legionnaire can use this flask to stabilize them and ensure their survival as the magical elixir stops the injury from becoming infected.
  • Every Legionnaire carries with them a holy symbol of their personal, chosen Order God. Whilst they rarely have magical abilities, Legionnaires believe that this grants them protection.
  • As they often need to set up camp, every Legionnaire carries a set of equipment needed for that, such as a shovel, hammer and nails, a tinderbox, rope etc.
  • When going on a campaign, Legionnaire usually pack a few days worth of rations, but they also carry with themselves basic cutlery and a small pot to boil water in or to make food from what they can gather.

Duties

As the Pilgrimite Legion most often accompanies other military forces as an elite addition, they rarely have to worry about mundane tasks around camps and sieges such as digging trenches and setting up defenses. That being said, each Legionnaire has their own set of duties when not taking part in a battle.
  • Gathering firewood or food
  • Setting up or dismantling their tent
  • Battle drills
  • Exercising and maintaining their equipment
  • Praying to their chosen god/goddess
  • Guarding key locations/people

Qualifications

In order to become a Legionnaire, one can take many different routes.
  • The most straightforward is to find the Pilgrim Fortress and apply. When doing so, a Master will be summoned to examine the applicant and decide if they are worthy enough to be a Pilgrimite. Their knowledge of the Order Gods is tested and their physical prowess is measured. After a set of tests, they must spar with the Master or an elder Legionnaire. If they show promise, they are recruited and assigned to a Tent, where they'll be taught by their comrades.
  • The most common way is to be born into it. When a member of the legion has a child, they are often raised around the rest of them and basically undergo the same training and education as other Legionnaires. When they reach adulthood, they are expected to apply to the legion. If they aren't completely opposed to the legion and haven't shown inaptitude, their examination is skipped and they are accepted into the legion.
  • The rarest method of getting into the legion is to be invited by a Master. During wars, the legion fights alongside many capable warriors, many of whom would easily pass their examination. In some cases, a Master can formally invite a warrior into the legion. Often times these Legionnaires advance through their ranks much quicker then others.
