The Moon

The only other visible planetary body in the Solar Sytem is the Moon of Trutina (called Vol in Elvish). In the sky, it appears roughly the same size as the Sun. Occasionally, it passes before it, causing Solar Eclipses.    Vol appears light grey most of the time, with a number of clearly visible craters on its surface. The side that faces Trutina is home to a particularly large crater, which gives the Moon an appearance similar to an eye, always gazing upon Trutina. Depending on the conditions, the Moon can also appear red, yellow, blue or even purple, all of which carry different meanings.   The Moon is the source of various religious and superstitious beliefs, some of which are unfounded, but many are easily observable. The light of the Moon, while proven to be only reflected from the Sun, carries a unique magical energy and can be used for various spells, curses and other magical effects.

The Moon in Order Belief

The Moon, primarily because of its resemblance of an eye as well as the Eyes of Perviga is considered to be a watchful guardian. It is often thought to be Perviga herself as she watches over the Orderly folk.   Counter-intuitively, using moonlight for magic is often considered to be heretical as it is most often associated with druidic magic.

Vol in Elven Belief

Vol, a name which comes from the elven goddess Volublectyth's name already alludes to its significance in the eyes of elves. It is considered to be the goddess herself as well as her home. While the Sun (or Sol) guards the day, Vol guards the night.    Animals that are active in the night are considered to be closer to the goddess and are thus more valued. Additionally, it is believed that the elves possess darkvision and don't require sleep only because Volublectyth wanted to spend more time with them and granted these gifts to achieve this.
