Kono Minoko
Bullish Hostess of the Glee
(a.k.a. 河野 蓑子)
Bullish proprietress of The Tanuki's Glee. Nobody seems to know exactly when Kono Minoko showed up in town. Indeed, she seems to boast a presence as old as Shimonoseki itself. In the heart of the port city, she pursues that most ancient and traditional of Tanuki pursuits: small business management.
Minoko's business has been particularly successful for at least a pair of reasons. The first is her sheer stubbornness and curious way of insinuating herself into any situation. It's very rare indeed, that the hostess of the Glee doesn't get what she wants. Second is her traditionalist outlook. While there's no denying that foreign trade has made Shimonoseki into what it is today, Minoko seems to somehow resent the intrusion of other cultures and influences upon her home soil. The Tanuki's Glee is carefully managed and decorated to scrub away any hint of outside cultural influence. This has made Minoko's establishment particularly popular among the artistic and working-class locals of Shimonoseki, who can always retire to the Glee when they want a simple, untinged taste of the Japanese.
Although not what would be considered spiritually powerful despite her longevity, Minoko's bullheaded determination and influence among the people of Shimonoseki combine to make her a force to be reckoned with. Her influence was admittedly hurt with the Mōri Clan takeover of her home province, but the Glee's growing popularity as a place for meeting after the Clan Tournament has already begun to repair that deficit.
