The Tanuki's Glee
Traditionalist Tavern
A public house located in the heart of downtown Shimonoseki. The Tanuki's Glee is famous as a meeting spot and somewhere to grab a decent meal. More importantly, it's viewed by locals in the high-traffic port town as a place to get away from foreigners and tourists. While outsiders aren't exactly forbidden from entering the premises, hostess Kono Minoko makes subtly sure that they don't feel too welcome.
The Glee's traditionalist reputation is furthered by its strictly Japanese ornamentation. From the fat, grinning Tanuki statue lounging outside to the art and flooring inside, everything has been carefully scrubbed of any foreign influences. Local performers are often welcomed to play for the entertainment of drinkers and diners in the evening. Such an open opportunity has done much for Minoko's reputation among the locals and especially local artists. It's rare not to hear some pleasant music or chattered comedy coming from the well-lit Glee even late at night when the streets are otherwise empty.
