Okājo

Vengeance Upon the Ungrateful

Okājo (a.k.a. 岡阿女)

Summary

A mysterious, ghostly woman who claims to be the mother of Shōta and Shōjō, two thorns in the side of Japan as a whole. Okājo is a name that could not possibly be real. The same could be said of her appearance. Most closely, Okājo resembles an "onryō," a vengeful ghost back from the grave to enact a bloody grudge upon the living world. According to her daughter, this is just "how she always is." It's hard to say whether Okājo is actually undead, a ghost, or just a very strange woman. Regardless, she seems to present no real threat to the living. At least, physically. Okājo is at least partially in on the scams the rest of her family perpetuate, using her spectral appearance to elicit pity in her victims. Her motives, origin, and behavior are as much a mystery as that of her relatives.
