The Enchanted Wood
Twisting Fairyland
A thick, expansive forest located near the geographical center of the Dreamlands. The Enchanted Wood's interior is ever-shifting, less grounded in reality even than the rest of the oneiric realm. It serves as a repository for fairy tales, folklore, and children's tales that all swim together and interact, creating a truly unpredictable landscape.
One of the few constants amidst the chaos of the Enchanted Wood are the Courts of Cards. These miniature monarchies remain fairly stable and fixed in their natures, and exert a measure of law and order on the forests around their castles. They purportedly owe their origin to The Dodo, whose penned stories make up a great deal of the wonders and dangers that exist in the Wood. Examination of these writings show, however, that the Dodo only truly created the Court of Hearts. The Court of Clubs, Court of Diamonds, and Court of Spades must have instead sprung up as a logical, conceptual follow-through to the existence of the first.
With the recent death of the Queen of Hearts and dissolution of the Court of Hearts, the remaining Courts have begun scrambling to fill the power vacuum left within the Wood. Their Card Soldiers have mobilized and captured most assets except the towering Castle of Hearts. It seems only a matter of time before full-scale war breaks out over control of this final symbol of power. Whoever controls the Castle of Hearts at the center of the forest may well control the entire Wood, given time.
Other powers are largely uninterested in The Enchanted Wood unless they have to be. Although Ulthar is not many miles away, and Dylath-Leen further down the river from that, few of the Dreamlands' natives or Dreamers venture often into the forest. It's too easy to get lost, trapped in some dark corridor of laughing trees, or encounter a vicious beast that defies any and all powers mustered against it. What's more, treasures raided from the arboreal depths have an uncanny tendency to transform into worthless trinkets when examined outside the confines of the Wood.
