Dragolings
Dragolings, more popularly called fire lizards are, at least we think so, a petite form of dragons, about three to five Spann in length.
They live in small "family" units with a single fertile, dominant female, and several males and females, most of whom are not fertile. Only the strongest males get to produce offspring with the matriarch/queen. When the queen is in heat she challenges the males to some form of competition, often a flight-based one but sometimes it can be another form of physical competition, races, climbing contests etc. The males compete against each other and against the female. As the Queen is significantly larger than any of the other Dragolings, the successful male tends to be strong, clever and in excellent physical shape.
Interestingly they have been seen breathing flames up to their own body length but it looks as though the dragolings do not have the organs associated with the flame weapon of the Higher Dragon or the Lesser Dragon. This has, in recent years resulted in a significant number of scholars thinking of the dragolings as something completely different.
They have the typical body plan of draconic lifeforms with three pairs of extremities and the second one becoming a pair of wings. Also, the instances mentioned above of fire breathing have been confirmed multiple times.
Still, their skin is not covered in the overlapping scales of the other dragon forms; thus, they are much less protected. Also, as mentioned above they are absolutely not solitary as the other Dragons almost always are.
Even if there have been reports of Dragons that few in formation. Those reports have yet to be confirmed by dependable sources.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The typical three paired extremities of all draconic species are present however, it looks as if it is always the second pair that became the wings.
This is somewhat unusual as the various dragons within the other two species vary with sometimes the first and in other individuals the first pair being the wings.
It has been suggested that this might be just a misinterpretation and that, during the maturation and growth of the dragon the wings just wander slightly so that with the bigger dragons the second pair, the wings, just moved right above the front legs.
Another even simpler theory is that the Higher and Lesser Dragons are not just two but various species.
Ecology and Habitats
Dragolings can be found at bodies of water. They have been encountered on all coastlines as well as on various rivers and lakes inland.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The observations suggest a mainly carnivourous diet of fish, various other small animals, insects complimented by small amounts of fruit, seeds and nuts.
The teeth are build for this lifestyle, sharp and pointy. The Animals to however have a double pair of specialized molar teeth on their jaws.
