The Spine and Ten Towns
A section of the world that is, in most cases, cut off from the rest of the world. After the destruction of the Throne of Winter, winter storms subsided enough for adventurers to attempt to travel through the mountains to these small towns. While this area is not a sanctioned country, there are those that would seek to aid the towns in an effort to build the area into habitable country for others to live there. Both Elleryn and Darendal hope to give both economic and military aid to develop the area into a country that is rich in both minerals, magic and gems.
Yet the looming issue of a sustainable travel route and the project to be later developed into a country is at a stand still. Multiple adventuring groups have traveled to the frozen dale north of Elleryn, only to disappear or die of exposure to the elements.
It is rumored that the goddess Auril, the Frostmaiden, rules over the land with a ruthless demeanor towards both the citizens and outsiders. She is said to expect tribute from the towns in order to keep the skies clear and winter storms at bay. The cold lands of the Towns are also home to many clerics and druids who worship the Frostmaiden. The clerics and priests of Auril travel throughout the towns seeking donations of gold or jewelry for their goddess. Most citizens are cordial with followers of Auril and at times submissive. Fisherman and hunters will often give dried meats or pelts to the Maiden's clerics when the wander into town.
Yet, the followers of Auril are not the only faction in the cold tundra. There are multiple theive's guilds, merecenary guilds and native barbarians that can also be found. Many travelers here will learn very quickly that the citizens of Icewind Dale are hospitable to those that earn their trust or to those that can pay them.
