Karen McLaren is a human swordswoman and sorceress who gained recognition as an elemental-rights activist after leading a successful uprising against the Thrallmaster Guild and killing its leader in a public duel. Her activism for equality earned her support from the other guilds and she has since gained significant financial influence over many Guildmasters, except for Hitch. McLaren heads the People for Ethical Treatment of Elementals (PETE) Guild, which advocates for responsible treatment of summons, pets, and contracted extra-planar beings. In recent years Karen has become a divisive figure, with many appreciating her previous work and her overall cause, but with others wary of their extremist viewpoints.
