Glassicles

Glassicles a the unique material created by lightening striking the desert of the Glittering Wastes. This event forms stalegmite-like shapes which jut out of the sand in the verdant greens, pinks and blues of the desert sand. As well as being revered as holy objects, often used for Divination and Augery, Glassicals can be turned into a wide variety of secondary products. Glassicals range in size from the length of a finger to the size of a human, with the largest being the most valuable and, usually, the most pure, since they are caused by the hottest and most violent lightening strikes.   The Ancestors, or Great Pillars of the Glittering Wastes are also Glassicals, presumably caused by vast lightening strikes the like of which have not been seen for centuries. These are considered as objects created by the gods in the religion of Thassaism and it is a grave insult to any Thassist to insult them or, gods forbid, mine them for glass.

Divination

Small to medium sized glassicals are used as diving rods. Somehow, it is not entirely understood, they can guide a person to a source of water within 50km. A collection of glassicals are also thrown up, like oracle bones, and their landing positions are read. Another method of augery or fortune telling involves throwing a glassical into a fire, and reading the cracks which form on its service. This is supposed to predict the future, or else the future which the gods desire, of the one who cast it into the flames. Whilst the divining properties of glassicals are relatviely reliable, at least in the right hands, their fortune telling properties are much debated.   Secondary Products As well as their uses as an item, glassicals are also valuable for a number of secondary products. Most useful to the Roachim are the Sand Glasses, the lenses of whcih are ground down from green glassicals to reduce sand blindness at mid-day. Glassicals are also carved, melted and blown into all manner of jewelry, trinkets and religiously statuary. Finally, the most skilled glass workers of the Roachim Nomads are able to create astonishing weapons and armour from glassicals, which bear resistances to cold, acid, lightening and piercing damage, but are prone to shatter when blugeoned.

Hey Janet! I included you in my reading challenge for this year's Summer Camp. This is such a nice example of visual and cultural worldbuilding! It reminded me of a desert in my own world: and the magical storm 'Tormardienta' that ravages that part of the continent. Minerals, crystals or glass created by a storm are such a powerful visual and fantastical concept. Up until now, the materials I wrote about are more or less created naturally. A material that is created by or in extreme circumstances (magical or not) is definitely on my to do list now! Thank you for inspiring me!
