Serpent Class

Design

A common medium ship used by many smugglers, pirates, and fugitives, they were built of light wood for speed rather than power. Duel masts tower from the deck allowing two large sails each, topped with lookout posts. The ships Normally boast 3 decks.
-The top deck normally holds the rigging and active crew, also boasting between two to four balisters.
-The second deck held the majority of the living conditions, from the captain's quarters, galley, armory, and births. More than one captain has cut into this space for extra firepower.
-The lowest deck or hold is used for goods storage, regardless of what it is.
-Eighty crew is considered the minimum for anything but skeletal crew jobs.

Origin

Several versions of the inspiration for the Serpent class exist, while the most excepted by schoolers is that it was designed by studying how thinner snakes move faster through the water. Another is that freed slaves found that smaller, faster ships were more successful against Phervian Gallies so toyed with several designs until settling on the Serpent. The most fanciful story is that of a ghost ship appearing and attacking an Phervian slave convey. The whole convey was lost with only a few slaves escaping, from their ramblings the first Serpent class was built.

History

First appearing a little before the rebel age, they rose to popularity during the revolts due to their ability to perform hit-and-run. As more established nations formed, they moved to sturdier ships and the Serpent fell out of favor. It started making an appearance again during the divine age used by outlaws and has been favored by those operating outside the law since. Though rumors persist of a ghost ship version that raids with impunity when it shows up.
