Wraith Guard

Also known as the Fortress of the Dead, it is the Northernmost part of the Dread Wall that borders the high sea, and the only Fortress on the wall still occupied by 'living' members. It also is the oldest settlement in Undinia

History

While the majority of its history is unknown, and large sections of its history have left it abandoned, Wraith Guard has been a visual sight for anyone around the High Sea.

Forgotten Era

Three things are known for certain, one, the Vedalken built the fortress as one of the wall resupply points and barracks. Two, it was a minor fortress on the wall. Three, Whatever cataclysm affected the Vedalken empire didn't touch the fort. All other information is guesswork.   It has been surmised, due to its size in comparison to other structures on the wall, that beings of giant descent were housed here. This would make sense due to its proximity to western Frostmourn where there is a large half-giant population. Also, the few wraiths that stay around the fort seem bigger.   It is also theorized that it was built to keep an eye on the undead of Frostmourn, though this is hotly debated. Not only does it assume the undead have always been there but it has been put forward by Akoomite schoolers, who have a bad history with Frostmourn and especially the Civipish natives.

Anceint Era

While more information exists, Wraith Guard was mostly abandoned for this era, becoming known as one of the haunted forts. This changed during the first Archlich's invasion of the south when over a thousand Draconic legionnaires defended the Citadel.   Thinking it had already been overrun they started fighting the wraith protectors until they saw other wraiths pushing back the skeletal horde. Realizing their mistake they quickly forged an alliance and over a four-day battle, the draconian in the day and wraiths at night, they finally defeated the undead horde. Though seeing the Wraiths they had killed on the first-night fighting on the fourth shook a lot of them.   The Draconians would keep a passing military presence after this, fixing up the fortress, though they built a small town for its own troops outside.

Phervian era

In the aftermath of the Phervian conquest, and the abandonment of Wraith Guard. They tried to set up several science laboratories in the area of Wraith Guard to study the wraiths there, though these labs kept becoming empty. After a few hundred years they gave up, leaving the wall to its own devices.

Era of Ages

while during the slave revolts Wraith Guard was left alone, its importance was realized by the Shadow Republic in its aftermath. Sending a small upkeep force to build a supply town on the outside of the fortress, this had turned into a small functioning town by 500 Rebel. They had taken on the role of caretakers, supplying materials and equipment, as well as a small number of troops, to the fortress. This also gave the area the name Wraith Guard.   When the Empire of Akoom arrived during the Crusade of Blood, the inhabitants informed the Paladins they don't care who was in charge, they just want to be left alone with their duty. While this was accepted for the longest time, the citizens of Wraith Guard were one of the groups declared heretics by the Demon Prophet. This caused the citizens to wall up the city and close its port, The watch bell sounded for the first time this age.   Facing starvation many citizens started to despair till their fort drop-off point became full of white city goods. The Captain of the Wraith's said they weren't about to leave those who helped them starve. A new understanding was reached with both groups supporting each other fully. A situation understood by the True Prophet when he arrived in 134 Blood. He declared Wraith Guard as critical to the defense of the new theocratic High Guard.   In the aftermath of the collapse of the Empire of Akoom, several new groups settled in the area, with a Paladin force moving into the main fortress to bolster the Wraiths, creating a day force for Wraith's night, Supplies flowing freely from High Town. A Civipish tribe also settled in the shadow of the fort, creating the first farmland around the area, on the condition they didn't practice necromancy. It should also be mentioned the first half-wraith showed up in this period.   In 118 fey the alarm bell sounded again, 'Vragh Arpad burns' being shouted from the walls. With messages sent out in a panic, Wraith Guard became the planning point for the entire northern conflict during the Crisis of the Fey age.

Layout

Wraith Guard is separated into several sections, each serving a different group of people.

Fortress of the Dead

While historically this massive bastion served on the Wraiths, since the mid-Blood Age, it has served both the paladins and Wraiths. Each room on the interior has one of three stamps on the door to show who the room is for, the Sword of Akoom for the paladins, a red-eyed empty helmet for the Wraiths, or and sword with red eyes just above the crossguard for both.   The fort itself is made up of the inner keep, which houses the barracks, crypts, armories, and store rooms. The inner wall circles the keep and also has the watch tower, a massive 400-meter tower where you can see the majority of the High Sea, Silent Lake, and Frostmourn as well as the Blighted wastes to the west. The outer wall circles this one and the main town, connecting to the Dread Wall. It also has raptor stables, though the occupancy has long since become wraiths.

Caretaker Town

The name given lovingly by the Wraiths, is built around a central market with a fountain in the middle. A few blacksmiths, armorers, and bakeries. The main dock is the only way into the town without going through the fort from the Dread Wall. Various warehouses and granaries line the dock to hold the city's goods.

Spirit mark Tribe

The tribe of Civipish is just outside the north walls. While not as defended as the other parts, a low wall does circle the main tribe with wraiths patroling it at night. Made up of several farms and an administrative building, they provided the majority of the food for the town.

I, too, enjoy writing histories where not everyone agrees on what happened. I also find the coexistence of living and dead on the fortress grounds fascinating, and I wonder what would make the living blacksmiths, etc. willing to live here.
