Starting as a refuge for escaping slaves, the shadow republic was the major power to replace the Phervians in the South. Starting in the Shadow planes, they consolidated the position before pushing north building cities on the coast of the Silent Lake.
History
From the shadows
Due to the Phervian grasp, Wralin and
Veil founded the shrouded city of
Hope, hidden from prying eyes. This refuge for escaped slaves was the launchpad for attacking the south of the Phervians. This however only lasted a decade as the revolts kept winning, allowing several villages to pop up around the southeast of the Shadow planes.
By Fifty Rebel,
Aten had been founded with its own Villages supporting it. Along across the shadow planes up to the foothills to the north with a council based out of Hope deciding policy.
Salazen was founded on the east coast shortly after.
Federation of Cities
After the Battle of
Shadowbrook, and Wralin's apparent death. Several groups moved further north, settling in the area around the silent lake, starting with the fort at Still Harbor and a small town at
Cavepost. Over the next two centuries, more settlements would pop up with several of these eventually becoming the Silent Lake city-states. In One-fifty Rebel, The council of Hope reorganized the republic to have a council member from each City in the republic. This allowed every city to prosper with
Mire of the dead
In late three-hundred Rebel, large numbers of undead started raiding the farms and villages around the ruins of
Voiddoll, This led to Hope pulling back its own army to protect the area. This proved futile as a mire expanded out and with every death the horde of undead grew. By five-hundred Rebel, The shadow planes had been devastated several towns destroyed, and Hope needed to make concessions to other cities to keep the fight going. Aten had taken over governance of the west Shadow Plains while
The White City took a lot of the bureaucracy of the republic itself. Hope itself remained a symbolic capital for the republic due to its founding and importance.
Dissolution
When contact with Hope was lost in six-forty Rebel, several of the cities started to vie to become the center of the republic with Aten, The white city, and Salazen. Over the next sixteen years, infighting prevented any meaningful response to the Mire resulting in the loss of Salazen and many cities declaring independence, with the White City disbanding the Republic in six-fifty-six Rebel.
Federational Republic
The entire republic was built on the basis of freedom and the advancement of the best. This led to an advanced educational system and a fluid class system. While each city had its own governmental system, the republic as a whole had a representative senate with two members from each major town with the republic and a single honorary position granted to several major neighboring cities. Republic policy and enforcement of the rules were decided within the representative meetings held first in Hope, then in the White City.
Legacy
Being one of two major powers to quickly appear after the slave revolts, The Shadow Republic and
Rivell set the standard for Undinia as a whole with the overall outlawing of slavery coming from the trade restrictions placed by the republic. Trade focus in and out of the republic also enriched the south of Undinia, a wealth that still dominates trade in the Fey age.
The biggest legacy however is the Silent Lake City states that split off from the republic at its end. Many of these still hold the architecture and laws and governmental systems set up by the republic in it's hey day. With the White City senate even being a hold over of the federation council.
