Scene: Becoming a Damselfly

"So you're my new co-driver? Guess I could do worse!" That is the greeting I get, when I stand at the Damselfly Delivery office, and Iolani stands next to the desk in her fancy sky blue uniform. A uniform I'll soon be wearing beside her. She even accompanies her comment with her patented disdainful elevator eyes.

"You haven't seen me driving yet," I smile and wink at her.

That attitude of hers would repel most people, but this is her acting kind. She has always had a haughty presence. She was the cool kid at school and she knew it. What makes her tolerate me is probably that we know each other way back - from the first orphanage where we'd be crying our little hearts out every night.
She was the first blue person I ever met, and even in the fearful and confusing times, I remember how otherworldly and magical it seemed even then. Most of us suddently had new skin colors to react to, but looking down at your body in blue must've felt even freakier...

"You'll do alright," she says, a slight smirk the sign of her approval. Clapping on a folded sky blue outfit on the desk, she goes: "Now, get out of those rags and put on the big girl pants."

Not ten minutes later, we're starting up the van. The job is simple enough. Damselfly Delivery collects wares from Otherworld at the nearby Àlf town of Idisiaviso and delivers orders to integrated fey folk. That usually means Vettir - the round eared fey folk, who can blend in unnoticed. I've heard said that they are genetically distinguishable from humans, but probably came from the same stock at some point.

"So, finally old enough to contribute to society, huh?" Iolani asks, mocking the very concept.

"Yup. Can't move to the city without cash," I respond, trying to match her cool demeanor.

"Wanna be a city chick, huh?" she grins, keeping her eyes on the road. "Gotten sick of co-living at the fairy tale farm?"

"I just... I have to try something else - something normal."

"Shit, that's sad." Iolani blurts out. She has always been very up front and opinionated. "Well, then this job will fit you perfectly. It's very unglamourous and mundane."

"Yet you are still doing it?"

"It's a stepping stone. I have dreams too, you know. My own dreams - not their 'full fey shit'!" she explains. Now I get why she passed on doing the Sigrblót. Iolani is of the strongest people I know, and never one to be bossed around. When she gets an idea, she starts realizing it right away, and won't let anybody stop her.

"Would you ever consider it?" I ask, opening a subject that I don't usually would want to talk about.

"Heck no! ...or, if I knew it would give me an edge, then maybe. But I'm not playing roulette with my destiny, no sir!" she proclaims vehemently. "You?"

"Never! I wouldn't wish it on anyone," I state confidently. My mind drifting to the night, I saw Mia become a banshee. That look of horror.

"Amen, sister!" Iolani lifts her water bottle in a cheer and takes a sip. "Turn over at that block over there. Our first stop."
