Jovian new year
Happy new year!
What year is it?
Still 2170! But happy new year! The Jovian new year is a celebratory festival celebrated on the moons of Jupiter. It doesn't celebrate an orbit of Jupiter around the sun, but is related to the orbits of Jupiter's Gallielan moons around the planet. Some Jovians will celebrate the festival even whilst off moon, which has lead to some small celebrations occurring on other moons and planets.
History
The festival started being celebrated in 2087, as a way of celebrating the orbital resonance of the Gallilean moons. Originally, it was celebrated roughly every 7 days. This didn't last long before people felt worn out by the festivities, and that they had lost the feeling that made them special. Changes were therefore made, including the orbit of Callisto, which isn't in resonance. This decreased the number of celebrations.
Execution
The celebration normally consists of similar celebrations to those that celebrate regular new years. People will drink champagne, set off rock cannon and fireworks.
It's said that celebrations can be seen from one moon on the other moon on that side of Jupiter.
Participants
People across the Jovian orbit celebrate.
Observance
The holiday is celebrated when the 1:2:4 resonance of the moons Io, Europa and Ganymede line up, so that Europa and Ganymede are on one side of Jupiter in line with each other. This also means that the orbit of Io positions it exactly opposite the two other moons, which happens every 7 days. On top of this, the orbit of Callisto, which is not in the same resonant orbit, must also roughly line up with Io's orbit, which happens every ?? days. This means that the holiday is celebrated every ?? days.
