Xalla
Goddess of the Moon
Considered one of the oldest and wisest of the gods, Xalla is often looked to for guidance. She is the widow of Ollitor, the now-deceased god of the sun, and once a goddess of healing. During the chaos that followed Cthulhu's emergence into the world, Xalla lost both Ollitor and her closest friend, Thaena, goddess of love. To honor the mortal who tried to save her husband, Teyocah, Xalla relinquished her domains of healing to him. She then took up the mantle of the goddess of the moon and love to honor Thaena. Xalla is typically depicted as a middle-aged woman with long hair that reflects the moon's phases. It starts night-black during the new moon but then grows a few strands of silver on one side that eventually spread across her scalp until she has a full head of glowing silver hair during the full moon.
Despite enduring the loss of the two beings closest to her, Xalla has maintained her composure and continues to be compassionate. She has even served as a confidant and supporter for many other gods in their struggles. She is a goddess of community and tries to bring relief to others by spreading her tranquility and resolve. Xalla has provided advice and even protection from other powerful beings for the likes of Nebt-Nehi, Imeyar, Teyocah, and Torgar. She adamantly opposes any who would prey on others, physically or emotionally, and many have discovered that she is deceptively powerful even amongst gods.
Followers of Xalla typically include mothers and lovers. She also attracts those who frequently travel or work at night and seek protection or guidance. Xalla even has good-aligned or reluctant lycanthropes that offer her prayers and count among her most devout followers, hoping the goddess's tranquility or purity will help them control their bestial urges or even cleanse them of the curse. Her clergy are beacons of community and support, often being sought out for their advice and aid for all manner of plights, whether supernatural or mundane.
Places dedicated to the worship of Xalla can vary from immense and beautiful structures or simple shrines in the open where the moon can shine on them through the night. Whether great or small, these structures often incorporate various architectural designs revolving around the moon and its light. Massive cathedrals might have ways to reflect the moon's light throughout the entire cathedral, while smaller shines might have skylights or open-skied chambers to view the moon itself. Xalla's places of worship may have safe rooms for those to seek shelter from abusive lovers or scornful families. They might also include more secretive and extremely secure cells in which those afflicted with lycanthropy can go to and lock themselves during their full moon transformations if they fear losing control.
