The Duchy of Vrelect
Vrelect is the northeastern-most duchy of Valeria which has been defined largely by its geographic position within the region. With the mountains of the area creating natural chokepoints, The Bay of Ruin representing a narrow inlet to the wider ocean, and the finest timber in Valeria, it seems as if Vrelect was always destined to take up arms as a regional military power. Maintaining the gruff and hardscrabble demeanor of the first men, Vrelect defines its cultural identity by defending the original nature of humanity through martial force.
Hosting the Port of Ruin (the second largest port in Valeria) and boasting master shipwrights and the aforementioned superior quality of timber, Vrelect is inexorably linked the the sea. Never conquered through military might, Vrelect was enticed to declare loyalty to the Magnas Dynasty through the process of economic incentivization and political integration. Vrelect has maintained its independent identity to a significantly greater degree than its ducal peers within Valeria.
Demographics
The Duchy of Valeria covers an area of 26 thousand square miles. Of this, 28% (7505 sq. miles) is arable land, and 71% (18 thousand sq. miles) is wilderness. The duchy has a total population of around one million people. The largest city, Port Ruin, has a population of roughly 19,500 people, the second largest, Bjornfell, a population of 7300. There are no other cities of note in the duchy, and 7 towns. The remaining population lives in numerous small villages, isolated dwellings, and work camps throughout the land.
Defences
The citadel of Port Ruin is as large and sturdy as it is old, its earliest fortifications dating back nearly 1,100 years to the founding of the city. Bjornfell is home to it's own fortified keep, and the Vrelect pass in the south of the duchy is guarded by the recently constructed Riverwatch Keep.
