Astus
God of Death (a.k.a. The Divine Silence)
Astus was the very first of the greater deities created by Gama and Eruer and holds a status marginally above the others, though most of them would be loathe to admit it. Also referred to as The Divine Silence, Ades oversees the domain of death. He guards passage to the afterlife and only permits souls he deems worthy to pass on. Those souls deemed unworthy are either destroyed utterly for their sins, or returned to Valine, disembodied, to be hunted by Hunia for another chance at existence. The lucky ones get another chance to face Astus' silent judgment.
Astus typically does not directly involve himself in the affairs of the living or, indeed, of the other gods. His most notable exception to this self-imposed rule was disastrous. In joining with his sibling, Jopha, to attempt to create the perfect divine being, the undead curse was released upon Valine in the form of Khydar the Unnatural, who joined the ranks of the gods and fundamentally shifted the balance at the same time. Since then Astus and his child have been in constant conflict over souls as Khydar claims many of those deemed unworthy and even attempts to intercept the worthy before Astus can judge them.
Throughout this all, Astus remains a stoic, silent figure of constancy, though the other gods would claim to see an everlasting regret behind the mask that Astus maintains. In the rare occasions that Astus appears to a mortal, he typically chooses the form of a Half-Orc, half-gnome of middle age wearing a covering over the lower part of his face. Beneath the covering, there is no mouth or nose and in such excursions to Valine, Astus communicates only telepathically as, indeed, he does with the other gods.
