Duchy of Bute
The Duchy of Bute comprises a group of islands off the north coast of Mithlerien on the western end. The administrative seat lies in the town of Wrathsea on the Island of Bute. The largest island in the Duchy is Erran.
The Narrows of Bute, a tortuous waterway, separates it from the mainland. Bute is separated from the larger island of Erran to the south by the Neck of Bute. Bute is around 15 miles long and 47 square miles in size, with Monstrous Peak in the west reaching an elevation of 913 feet. The island's western side is steep, but its eastern side is flatter and more fertile. Several small lakes can be found in the interior. Numerous ruins and some of Iosse's oldest shrines may be located on the island. The majority of the island is suitable for farming, with crops such as oats, turnips, and potatoes. Cattle farming, forestry, and architecture are some of the other economic activities.
Though a larger island, and at times a more important one both strategically and materially, Erran is currently best known for its monasteries of warrior Monk. These Monk also produce a fine whisky to fund their activities. Though technically under control of the Duchy, the Monk are given a great deal of latitude and self-governance.
The Duchy is a relatively recent addition to the Kingdom of Mithlerien, although the territory has been closely associated with, and even under the control of, Mithlerien at several points over the centuries.
